Hi there, I'm new to VT and I did see this previous post about someone travelling from Nairobi to Arusha: lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/t... (I hope it's a good trip, because I'm going to be doing the same!) I'm looking to rent a car however, with pick up in Nairobi and drop off in Arusha. I'm having difficulty finding a good company to rent from -- I know I'll need a 4x4, but the main problem is finding a company that will let me do cross-border drop offs. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good rental company? Thank you!

Hi And welcome to VT! I think that you need to provide us with some clarification here so that we don't offer you irrelevant advice. Firstly, can you indicate why you assume that you'll need a 4x4? If you're only travelling the road between Nairobi and Arusha, then you won't need a 4x4: however, if you are planning to visit other places en route, then you will do. In general, dropping off a vehicle at a different location from the point of rental comes with a stiff financial penalty, which is only exacerbated if there are two different countries involved. If you can avoid this situation, then I would: generally speaking (and not knowing the specifics of what you intend to do), I'd consider hire a vehicle in Nairobi to tour around Kenya and return it in Nairobi and then look to a service provider to arrange land or air transfers to Arusha, which is probably going to be more affordable. It would also help if you were to summarise your proposed itinerary here, as many VTers who respond on this forum are not necessarily keen to open links to other websites. And the link you've included above appears only to be your own query posted on thorntree as far as I can see? Regards Cathy

if you just want to get from Nairobi to Arusha, the best und easiest thing to do is taking one of the shuttle busses. taking a car out of Kenya is complicated and requires a lot of red tape even if it´s your own car - it is worse when you have a rental. btw, at 4x4 is not necessary for just the road down to Tanzania. Even Amboseli can be easily done without a 4x4.

Hi there. I also went to arusha and would recommend a guy called Steve (working with Jumbo Africa Safaris) They are reliable and also offers good cars and drivers the takes care of the PTA insurance charges. Hope that helps.
