Dear Vter's, I'm planning for a trip to Nairobi & Masai Mara in August. I need reply on following: 1) Masai Mara reserve fees is USD 70/night. Is it payable for each night of stay or one time online. we are spending 2 nights in reserve. I've checked website of Narok city council, as per that "Daily fees” means fee for one day/ twenty four hours or thereof continuous stay within a specified site in the Maasai Game Reserve. Is that means we've to pay total USD 70 for our stay, as we will stay inside Reserve and making only 1 entry. Please confirm. 2) We are group of 6 persons with 2 children, looking forward to arrange transportation facility by ourselves, instead of tour package, in order to do things as per our convinience. Any recommendations. 3) Our flight is reaching 2.30 am to Nairobi. Is it safe to start driving for Masai Mara around 4.30am/5.00am in the morning. Thanks in advance. regards Nilin
Hi there, I have just returned from the Masai Mara. The fees have gone up to80 per night. If you stay inside the Masai Mara reserve(not just inside the gates of the park but anywhere inside the reserve itself which extends almost to Narok in that direction) you are charged that amount for every night you stay there. That is, if you camp outside the gates in one of the camping areas for example and go through the gates for a game drive in the morning, you will be charged for the night before as you are have slept in the reserve and will possibly have to leave by the afternoon or pay for another night. The entry is valid for 24 hours if I am correct. The border of the reserve almost stretches to Narok on that road so be aware of where you are. There is also a new system in place to purchase tickets and it is frought with much frustration. That is why it is better if you have a local driver who knows what is what.I have been there many times and always use the same small company who are excellent with an amazing guide/driver.We had such trouble this last trip with tickets going through the Oloolaimutiek Gate(from Narok) as did many of the tour companies. Convenience is one thing but in the end it may be more convenient to have a driver who knows the area and can take you to the animals. I seldom see people driving around the Mara without a driver. It is 1500 sq kms so there is a lot of scope to get lost. The recent rains have churned up the place and a 4x4 is really essential. Bogging is commonplace so be prepared. As for travelling there, I would wait until daylight due to the high incidence of accidents with poorly lit vehicles, animals on the road etc. All in all it is a wonderful place and you will love it if all goes smoothly. If you would like to ask me anything please email mrs_elf@hotmail.com, Anne

you already got some replies on the entry fees, so I´ll just focus on your driving question - I would not recommend to start your drive at 4.30./5.00. Wait until there is some daylight at least, so if you start from Nairobi airport, count for something around 6.00 - you will still have a good start before rush hour kicks in and you will have at least twilight. Driving by dark, especially for a foreigner who does not know the place, is simply dangerous.

Hi Niln, I am not sure if that is the best idea like arriving in Nairobi at that early hour of the day and proceed with Masai Mara drive. I don't think it is safe to even think of that. I have personally visited Kenya 5 months ago and I had lived in Kenya for 2 years, mostly in Nairobi. I love Kenya, but its safety concerns are undeniable. You have to know how to handle yourself in Kenya. This means not allowing any perpetrator to ruin your vacation when you have found a great vacation opportunity like this with your family. Make sure you first get a place to rest to Nairobi and chill for a little bit after your unassumingly going-to-be long long flight to Kenya.
