Late night arrival-need to eat

by scott_6117 Online Now May 26, 2012 at 9:35 AM

Stupid question but I'll be traveling to Tanzania via Kenya in July. I arrive in the middle of the night (3am) and will be traveling by bus to Tanzania leaving at (5am). Are the restaurants in the airport open at that hour or is anything open in town? Also, I'll have 2 days to spend in Nairobi on the way back, any suggestions on things to see while we're there? Thanks!

Your connection for the bus to Tanz. sounds tight! You'll have to collect baggage, clear immigration, and get to the city for the bus, all in under 2 hours! Sure it's advisable? I understand there are later buses to Tanz as well.. Anyway, good luck :-) For the return, I suggest you dine at Carnivore restaurant in suburban Nairobi. Great concept, interesting game meat, nice ambience, several dancefloors ;-)

I assume you booked one of the shuttles to Tan that stop at the airport? Because aside from the time factor (getting through immigration and getting your baggage can take a bit. 3 am arrival sounds like you are either flying Turkish airlines or Ethiopian, they are the only ones I am aware of with arrivals at that hour, so all the passport and bags processing is faster than at other times. Still, hanging around the bus stands in Central Nairobi at the early hours is not advisable for a tourist having just arrived in the country. So in case you haven´t a bus that picks you up at the airport en route to Tan, I´d stongly advise to re-schedule. Most of the shuttles pass Nairobi airport around 7.30/8 am, I think. It´s about 8 hours to Arusha, a bit over 10 to Moshi. Your best food option at the airport is the Java house at Gate 14 - before you get to customs and immigration. Otherwise, if you have a really tight schedule and need to move on, try the Doormans at the ground floor of international arrivals. They don´t have a lot foodwise though. As for things to see and do in Nairobi, it would be good to know a bit about your interests first to be able to make the best recommendations.

This is a good question, to start with there are several airport resturants in kenya operating for 24 hours, i was with some visitor and he arrived a bit early by 1 am at night and was forced to wait until dawn so that we could resume our journey to homa bay town here in Kenya. About Nairobi there are much to see here, what do you love to watch most? wildlife? or just walking around the town enjoying the scenery? That now depends you. I am in Nairobi and would be really ready to give you the walk for the two days you will be here...i am not a tour guide but i too love to enjoy the scenery and tell people about our lovely country. my adress is lewisnick31@yahoo.com. feel free to contact me.
