How long will it take to self-drive from Mombasa to Nairobi?
Hi, I got the bus 2 years a go and what was meant to be a 7 hour trip took 15 hours due to the bus breaking down a couple of times and due to the diversion of traffic due to a construction of a new highway. I have no idea whether the highway is finished or not but if it is and you're self driving i would say it would take 5-6 hours depending. Happy travels!

I guess around 7 hours but just remember to miss the "rush" hours aproaching Nairobi. That can put hours on to your trip.

it really depends on the power of your car, the time of the day you start and your experience with Kenyan bus/truck/matatu drivers. But I would guess seven hours are a minimum (a colleague of mine claims he can do it in 5,5 hours, but I have serious doubts about this). Both in Mombasa and in Nairobi the traffic, especially during rush hour, turns into a bottleneck that can slow you down considerably. Once it has taken me over two hours to get from Athi River into Nairobi - a short stretch of merely 30 km. Same goes for the Miritini/Mazeras area around Mombasa.

I have driven this road with a driver several times this past 12 months and it very much depends on where you are in Nairobi ( the wrong side of town can add 2 hours to the trip!) and the traffic/accidents on the road. 7 hours is a conservative time, can be as long as 10 on a bad day. Happy driving and do not attempt this road when it is dark - it is far to dangerous. We pulled in when 3 sets of headlights came towards us!

i drove nairobi mombasa (south cost) in feb 2011. . it was my first drive in africa and i used around 8 hours. we started off at 6 in the morning to avoid the traffic in Nairobi. the road is quite good exept for some minor road work areas. despite i got a lot off warnings about driving there it was actually some off the best experiences from our kenya vacaiton. an it was a a quite good service network along the route. we experienced som problems with the wheel. and it was fixed in 15 minutes at a cost off 200 shilling. so my advice iff u like to drive car is to go for the drive. but be sure to start off early in the morning so you have some extra time iff u face som problems and avoid to drive after dark.

To complement Sphynxx's excellent answer, do NOT, under any circumstances, travel after dusk. The road turns into bandit territory - especially around Salama. You will notice traffic visibly beginning to taper off after 4.00 pm Regards Mwenyeji
