Help with Safari park choice

by freebird99 Online Now Dec 16, 2009 at 11:14 PM

All,
I am trying to confirm which parks to go to. This is my first time going to Nairobi and a safari and I just wanted some advice on the following programs. I have read a couple posts on other sites that mention the lack of rain having an impact on amboseli and that perhaps it may not be as interesting. Considering the distance between amboseli and other route options I was re-evaluating my desire to see Kili and whether it was worth going to Amboseli at all. I look forward to getting feedback.

My interests is primarily photography and meeting Masai and other tribes where possible. Of course I would love to see as much wildlife as possible but would also be content with seeing the beauty of the landscape.

Option 1 - 6 Days Amboseli/Nakuru/Masai Masai Mara
Option 2 - 6 Days - Rift Valley Lakes (Lake Baringo, Bogoria and nakuru) /Maasai Mara
Option 3 - 5 Samburu & Great Rift Valley Lakes

Thanks for your feedback!
Anna
:-)

Freebird, please do go there. It is not to be missed! I have fronted several tours on safaris both in Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana, as well as Kruger in South Africa, and would not have missed any of them. You have several choices in Kenya, and a number of outfits to choose from. Take a look at my Kenya page for all things safari. If you need further information please just ask.

One word though, - make sure you visit a doctor, preferrably a travel medicine specialist, regarding the neccesary vaccinations and other medical precautions. Do not take any advise from non medical people, including us. This is far too important an issue to leave to amateurs.

Sounds pretty good Anna. Nothing wrong with the itinerary.

I personally am partial to the Mt Kenya Nat'l Park, and the Mt. Kenya Safari club, and the "Tree Hotel" (Serena Mountain Lodge), as you may have seen on my Kenya Page. There are several "Tree Hotels" (for a lack of a better description), where the hotel is built either into the trees or on stilts, by a watering hole or a salt lick, where you can be on the balcony and watch the wildlife come for the water or salt lick. Just a thought....d:o)

You're welcomed to check out our Kenya pages.

We did, and highly recommend the following:

    Masai Mara 3 days
    Lake Nakuru 1 day
    Mt. Kenya 1 day
    Amboselli, 2-3 days.

We loved the Mara and Amboseli national Parks.
Totally different in both scenery as well as animals.

Anna, that is what we're here for on VT.
Glad you found our information useful. It was through initial inquiries and tip reviews, especially from regular Kenya tip poster Krummel that our "dream trip" became a reality.
Please feel free to email us for additional inquiries, if any.
I would only be too pleased to help you!

    Enjoy your safari!

    Hi Homer,
The more I review the experiences of others I am wondering whether it would be best to focus on Mara and another park that is "closer" to the Mara, perhaps Samburu or Lake Nakuru. Looking at the map from the Safari Patrol website, Amboseli, Samburu and other parks see so far from Mara so it's likely that I am not saving any more time by opting for Samburu rather than Amboseli.

I love photography and I'm really excited at the possibility of having Kili as the backdrop for many of my photos should we go to Amboseli but I understand that the distances between these parks is quite long and I was just second guessing my itinerary. I wish I had the luxury of 2 weeks but with a demanding job I can only get a little over a week this time and I'm trying to be careful not to jam too much in 6 days.

As you had 9 days, 3 more than I do, but still not quite 2-3 weeks as I have seen from other experiences did you feel like there was too much on your plates. I thought about flying between parks but not sure it can fit into my budget and while I know driving is going to be very bumpy I like that driving opens up more opportunities to enjoy the landscape and see villages.

Anna, there is indeed a lot of travel time between parks.
Here is what I can tell you.
The scenery/landscape varies greatly between the parks.

Mara is endless prairies and savannahs with many many animals wondering about.
You will certainly see herds of the grazers such as Wildebeest, Zebras, antelopes, etc., and of course the carnivores which follow them.
We loved the Mara for sunrise/sunsets too.

Amboselli, although much open prairie doesn't have the grasslands that the Mara offers.
It does have it's immense herds of elephants.
Here is what I will tell you about Kili: It was surprisingly dissapointing because of it's snow melt.
I was used to seeing it on pictures or films with it's snow capped peak. Today, only a small sliver remains visible on top.
Additionally, it is only visible shortly in the morning and again late afternoon/early evening.

If you're concerned about time then I would do Mara and Samburu or Mara and Lake Nakuru.
Lake Nakuru was nice but monotonous for picture taking.
It's a smaller park but it did have it's rhinos and baboons.
The only place I wasn't crazy about was Mt. Kenya/the Ark.
Too "Disney world" feeling for me.

We visited in Sept and there were more dead animals to see in Amboselli than anything else . It's a sad state. I would skip this part of the agenda. Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara were wonderful . Our favorite was the Serengeti.

Ok folks, so we've finally confirmed our itinerary as follows:

2 nights @ Kibo Safari camp in Amboseli - www.kibosafaricamp.com/

1 night @ Kembu farm in Nakuru area - kembu.com/component/option,c...

2 nights @ Siana Springs in Maasai Mara - heritage-eastafrica.com/tent...

We decided to still go to Amboseli and made some camp adjustments. We're really looking forward to the trip and I hope to report back with great news.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.

As someone who lives in Kenya, I'd say:

    - Masai Mara is the park where you'll see the more animals, and it's the perfect African savannah you see in TV docm=umentaries, since many of them are filmed there. Very beautiful.

    - Samburu is made of 3 neighboring parks (Samburu, Buffalo Parks, Sheba) offering very different landscapes, including mountains. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful landscapes in Kenya. Lots of elephants.

    - Amboseli offers a beautiful view on the Kilimandjaro

    - Nakuru is really small but pink flamingos and rhinos are worth the trip
