Our family is going to Nags head this summer and we will be driving from the north. In years past we used I-95 to I-64 to get to Norfolk but the traffic is pretty thick. Is Rt 17 (from Fredricksburg to Norfolk) or some other route a better alternative to get to Norfolk and then to Nags Head?
I would advise againest Rt 17 with its many lights and slow driving the last third of the way. You might take I-95 to Richmond and crossover the James and take Route 10 all the way to Suffolk where it meats Rt 58 then North to the bottom of 64 to the 168 bypass to Nags Head. This route is not heavily traveled and enjoyable to drive in the country. Check your map and I think you will miss the bulk of the I64 stop and go traffic.

Thanks from me too. I love it when people share the best driving routes to avoid traffic. Thanks again Jim
