    • DIY/Hardware store in Cheboksary

      Cheboksary May 17, 2015 at 2:59 AM

Hi All. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a reliable hardware/DIY supplier in Cheboksary? I will be working at an event there in June however the goods we are shipping over from the UK are being sent on a carnet document meaning that we can't send consumables with the main transport. We will need things like screws, nails, adhesive tapes etc.

      Many Thanks in advance!

      Saint Petersburg

Saint Petersburg May 5, 2015 at 6:54 AM

      Is this workable:

25 May Mon Day 03 : Moscow Vnukovo VKO - St. Petersburg Pulkovo LED (Taxi)–Aeroflot Rossiya SU6124 flight 09.30 – 11.00. St. Petersburg – Have driver & guide pick up directly from airport to Pushkin (1 Hr.) for Catherine Palace as per appointment time (closed on Tuesday & last Monday except for Summer, 670R, 30 min.). See the spacious airy ballroom, the “Grand Hall” or the “Hall of Lights”, with a spectacular painted ceiling, and comprises numerous distinctively decorated smaller rooms, including the reproduced Amber Room. Visiting the Imperial park, after the palace, and possibly the cute little town of Pushkin.

Drive along the ‘Great Perspective’ famous today as Nevsky Prospect, lined with marble palaces of Russian royalty and aristocracy. Visit St. Issac’s Cathedral - the main church of the Russian Empire. Later, visit to The Peter and Paul Fortress - the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706-1740.

Evening at Leisure or view ‘opening of the bridges’ along Neva River cruise. OR C-189 Submarine Museum. Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel. Pochtamtskaya Str 4 St. Petersburg - 190 000, RU. +78123804000

26 May Tue Day 04 : St. Petersburg – Visit the Hermitage Museum (closed on Monday, 600R o18), a museum of art and culture in St. Petersburg. It is the largest and oldest museums in the world with collections comprising of nearly three million items including the largest collection of paintings in the world.

Proceed to Peterhof (closed on Monday, 700R o18, 45 min). It is famous for its series of palaces and gardens known as the Peterhof Palace, laid out on the orders of the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great and sometimes called the ‘Russian Versailles’. Later, visit the Grand Palace entering by the ornate Ceremonial Staircase and see the Ballroom, Throne Room, the Western Chinese Study, the Drawing Room, the Imperial Suite, the Oak Study Room and the Crown Room. Visit Faberge museum.

From there, visit Church on Spilled Blood's interior, and maybe a canal cruise to see more of the city that is harder to see on foot. We could visit the Faberge Museum and palace, or visit Peter and Paul Fortress/Cathedral because they are open later.

Tonight, we discover traditional Russian dance and music during an elegant reception at the Russian Folklore show.

How do we fiat all this in??

We have to go to Pushkin directly from the airport, to be able to see. How long will that take? Can we aim for the 1 pm slot (Our flight reaches at 11 am)?

How and where do we hire minibus/van for 9 of us (including 1person 74 year old)?

We would need English speaking guide / Driver and van/bus on all days I think? How and where to book these at a decent rate?

      Thanks friends

We would like to see the Pushkin -- Catherine's Palace (i think on 25th itself, as I believe it is closed on Tuesday the 26th). How do we go about this? Do we go directly from airport bu private van/minibus? How do we arrange van with English speaking driver or guide?

What else can we do on this day?

We would like to visit the Hermitage and Winter Palace, The riverfront and the opening of the bridges etc.?

How do we capture the essence in the short time that we have? What all can we do and see? Any activities??

How do we reach the train so early in the morning of 27th May, from hotel??

I know that these are a lot of questions, but please do help.

      Thanks in advance.

      Moscow Apr 26, 2015 at 5:23 AM

Hi...i want to know that given the current currency crisis in Russia, how has it effected the day to day prices in Moscow.

I am planning to travel with my wife and 12 year old son in June and would like to stay in a decent 3 star property and do the normal touristy things, have an un-rushed feel of the city, sit out cafe type lunch and some walk around sight seeing in the late afternoon / evening.

Then we plan to go to St. Petersburg by high speed train

How much should be budget per day in dollars per head? We so not plan to eat at fancy places or stay at fancy places but would like to visit the touristy cathedrals/spots, etc. So not a budget travel but not too expensive too

What kind of costs for such a normal holiday? Any insights will be appreciated.

      Taking great photos

      Moscow May 16, 2015 at 4:59 AM

I would like to ask those who have been to Moscow or those who have lived or who are currently living in Moscow (I am emphasizing these so I do not get a copy and paste answer from those who have not been to Moscow at all): Could you give me some hints where I could take great photos of Moscow´s landmarks? I will be there for only 3 nights and that is why I could really use some tips. Please do not give me tips like hire a professional photographer or some other tips that I could come up myself (sorry if I am being straightforward but I am really discouraging tips that will turn me off because I seldom ask for tips. thank you).

by MarkAS2013 Online Now Aug 27, 2013 at 6:06 PM

I am hoping to find suitable tours for Northern Russia.

I arrive in Kirkenes Norway on 5th May 2014 and wish to be in Saint Petersburg by 16th May 2014. I understand that I will need to travel from Kirkenes to Murmansk by bus.

I am seeking any information regarding tours in the region of Russia from Murmansk to Saint Petersburg preferably by train
I am seeking assistance with not only stopovers and sites to see, but also the support of English-speaking guides in the recommended locations, purchase of tickets and (budget) accommodation. I will be travelling alone.
I welcome any suggestions you might make.

    • What tour to take while in Murmansk for 1 day?

by Jean2010 Online Now Apr 6, 2011 at 6:57 AM

We arrive on Sunday, June 19th.
Since we will only have a group Visa, we must take one of the 5 ship tours, or sign up for an individual guided tour which will be very expensive I'm afraid. (They are not posted yet.)
My husband is interested in the nuclear ice-breaker and ship museum.
But I'm afraid we will not see much else.
If we take that tour, will we get to at least drive through the city, or is the museum and ice-breaker near where the cruise ship docks?
I'd like to do a little shopping too - would anything be open on Sunday?
      Thoughts please!

by jeana-r Online Now Apr 21, 2009 at 7:11 AM

      Hi,
Will be stopping in Murmansk this summer on a cruise ship, and want to see a little of the city. Since I work on the ship, I am not certain I will get a tour so I need to plan an independent one. Can anyone tell me how easy difficult it will be to get around from the ship terminal; I realize I will have to get a visa but I am wondering if there are local (English speaking) tour operators who can provide a day tour with a blanket visa and what I might be able to see either with them or on my own.
      Many thanks.

Hi, Any info. on Murmansk as a place to visit for 4/5 days in the month of either May or June? I`m thinking of visiting there next year and would like to know if its worth the stop.I can only select a maximum of 6 cities on my Visa, so i want to check out each one before hand. Is Murmansk safe for lone backpackers? Would it be too cold to do outdoor exploring in late April/Early May? Any info.or strange tales appreciated. Thanks.
