I'm not sure about Munnar specifically, but leeches in the Western Ghats come with the rain. The monsoon season usually runs through around September. If you're planning to walk in the woods or through tea planatations, you'll probably see some.

There's a regionally made stuff (it's kind of a disgusting-looking and -smelling paste, not sure what it's called, but someone there will know) that repels them. Use it with high-DEET-concentration bug spray on your legs (past the knee), socks, and shoes, and you should be pretty safe from them.

You probably wouldn't even notice being bitten until they were done and gone. It's medically a problem if your blood doesn't clot normally or you don't clean the wound well - but the real problem is that the idea of being bitten is so revolting. Do what you can to prevent them, but don't worry too much, and bring some bandages. That area is too beautiful to spend your time stressing out about leeches!

Unfortunately Munnar treks and tea plantation zones are overflowing with leeches. However it's not that bad in Munnar town. Inside your home stay/hotel leeches won't be a problem as such.
One needs to be careful on days when it has rained a lot and the whole path is muddy that's when Munnar is a proper breeding ground for leeches.

If you are a nature lover you'll enjoy walking/trekking through the forests of Munnar. But watch out for leeches especially in warm damp weather.
On being bitten by a leech - clean the area using soap and water. Dry it and apply a disinfectant. Use a bandage if need be.

Have a great trip to Munnar. Here's your handy travel guide to the place -

If you use leech socks you can protect your feet. I have been doing a lot of trekking and getting less bites after I got a pair of leech socks. All other methods do have many disadvantages.
