We will be visiting Munich in 2nd week of December. I have seen some picutres of a frozen lake near Munich where ice skating can be done. Can somebody indicate the exact location of these lakes and if they are available during our visitng period. Thanks alot
Sorry, mid December is too early for frozen lakes. They normally freeze over in January or February and only if it's cold enough for a long time. You have to be really lucky (or unlucky ;) that it's cold enough already in early December. Sabs

Sabsi is right with her info that mid December normally is too early to skate on lakes. However, at the moment it is already very cold in the south of Germany, and if winter arrives early, who knows... There will always be signs at the lakeshores telling you if the ice is thick enough to skate on it. Some of the places in and around Munich are: Fasaneriesee, Feldmochinger See, Langwieder See, Lerchenauer See, Lußsee, East and Westpark, and the lake at Blutenburg Castle. They also do curling on the canals and the lakes at Nymphenburg Castle. You might also see skaters on Kleinhesseloher See and the lake in the Olympic Centre but officially it is forbidden and dangerous because they are no still waters. It is said that the canal at Nymphenburg Castle is the safest place for skating because the water is very shallow. If it is just about skating and not the location, you can always go to the skating rink at the Olympic Centre (Olympia-Eissportzentrum), next to the Olympic Tower.

hi there, if it's only for the ice skating, they put up an ice skating rink over the fountain at Karlsplatz/Stachus (the square at the western end of the mall) each winter starting end of November. I found two web sites about it, both of which haven't updated their dates yet: http://www.muenchnereiszauber.de/ (German only, sorry. have a look at "Bilder" for a couple of images) The English version of the official web site of the city of Munich is still announcing the 2005/2006 Eiszauber :-) (Ice Skating at Stachus square): muenchen.de/Stadtleben/Sport... (it also shows a couple of other ice skating rinks) but the German version at least has a couple of pictures as well: muenchen.de/Stadtleben/Winte... Enjoy Munich, Glissi
