Hi ! There are several such castles on the river Rhine. Have a look in my page: virtualtourist.com/m/1ffe4/a... The Rhine is of course not in Bavaria, but maybe 150km west of Rothenburg good luck ! Michael

um, yeah very much wishful and unrealistic thinking, staying in a castle usually costs a couple of hundred euros a night. A budget alternative is the youth hostel in Pullach on the S7 line from central Munich, it was converted into a youth hostel, lovely views of the Isartal (river valley) from the turrets... stayed there a few nights, i should have a link to it on my Munich page. Hi, I stayed in the Youth Hostel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber once and it's wonderful. It's not exactly a castle but still housed in an medieval building (an old mill), and of course it's right there next to the historic city center (which is really all Rothenburg is). The food is great as well (of course we were there with a big group, but still -- have you ever have had sushi at a youth hostel?) Anyway, check out jugendherberge.de/jh/rothenb... The page is in German though - I hope this is okay. Online booking is also possible at djh-ris.de/ris.php3?house1=0... The only catch with Bavarian youth hostels is that you have to be 26 or younger to stay, unless you are a family with at least one underage child. But usually if it's off-season they'll be able to bend the rule. Good luck!

Dear members, Thanks so much for all your speedy and useful information. Unfortunately, my husband and i are over 27!! We can't stay in hostels. (learn something new today!) I'll look for those websites you posted for me. I need to find one along my driving route ie. close to Rothenberg or Munich. It's surprised to know that living like king or queen (i meant in the castle) can be quite affortable. thanks again. Please keep update me if you can find some more. ann

Hi there, another beautiful castle I can recommend is the Goetzenburg in Jagsthausen about half an hour away from Rothenburg. It was the castle of Goetz von Berlichingen, maybe you've read the novel Goethe wrote about him. In summer they have a festival where they play the novel. http://www.burghotel-goetzenburg.de/ Silke

The room price page itself is interestingly in German + some English and French. burghotel-goetzenburg.de/bur... Jagsthausen is however no more in Bavaria. Next bigger city is Heilbronn. But the castle of Götz von Berlichingen is rather Burg Hornberg (also a castle hotel) which he bought in 1517 and where he lived until his death in 1563. 83 years old - not bad for a knight who barely missed a war or a feud in his lifetime.

The double room for EUR 66,00 is without shower / WC. This is not really standard anymore, but in old buildings you have sometimes no other choice (as owner). Northern Bavaria (Franconia) is generally cheaper than the region around the Neckar in Baden-Württemberg.

Hi Ann, Jagsthausen is the family seat of Goetz von Berlichingen and Hornberg he bought later like Abada said. I've never been to Hornberg so I can't say much about it. My cousin celebrated his wedding on the Goetzenburg in Jagsthausen, so I had the chance to see some of the rooms. They where all beautifully decorated in medieval style. Me and my mom had one of the rooms without shower/WC it had a sink in the room shower and wc where shared with one other room. We slept in two 500 year old beautifully painted "canopy beds". People where a lot smaller in those days, so if your tall don't take that room. Most of the rooms I saw had double beds. My brother and his wife for instance had the former duchess room with a huge canopy bed their two girls fit in too :-) Their room was with shower/wc and was around 100 Euro. The restaurant was also very good. Silke
