It's nothing but a visa allowing its holder to pass through a country but not to stay there.

For instance; some countries require people from certain nationalities that are traveling to different destination other than their country, but with a stop in an airport on their soil, to obtain a transit visa.

Usually it is not hard to get them as you don't need to prove much except for a clean background.

For more information, you can visit the VFS Global website.

A transit visa is for passing through a country to a destination outside that country. A transit visa is limited to several hours or several days, possibly depending on the circumstances of the transit itinerary

Had the dubious pleasure of an international transit at Mumbai earlier this week and my tip to you is DO NOT GO THERE. Find another route that does not involve changing planes at this airport. Incompetent does not to them justice, around two hours in a mosquito infested corridor, no toilet facilities, no information, no organised lines - go elsewhere!

Suppose you are travelling from Mumbai to New York by British Airways via London. You would have to change planes at London. Now suppose you had to collect and re-book your luggage also before boarding your plane from London to New York. From the plane side you would have to go to the land side, collect your baggage and do Customs and Immigration all over again. You would require a Transit Visa.

In a real-life situation however, since your luggage is booked through to New York from Mumbai, the hassle of collecting your luggage and re-booking would not be there.

The original poster LIVES in Mumbai! He would hardly need a transit visa for Mumbai.

Transit Visa is Different for all countries. They all have different time frames as well. Mostly not more than 15 days. But in general it means you are getting a connecting flight and be out of the country in a few days.

Transit visa --I should say it is permission to land in an airport which is used to catch another flight to a different country. For instance, you are travelling from Mumbai (holding Indian Passport] to Canada Toronto via USA Chicago, and you are catching another flight from Chicago to Toronto; since you landed at Chicago, you need a US Transit visa to board the flight to Toronto. Transit Visa is generally not required in many countries, for instance, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and many Asian countries and some European countries. Transit visa is a must if you pass thro' USA, Canada, UK, for certain nationals. Your travel agent or airline will caution you before for this.
