J'burg - Mozambique - one way budget safari (no tents) - 6 days possible

by sukala Online Now May 6, 2012 at 11:46 AM

Dear all, hope you can help. Our plan is to arrive in J'burg, take a safari to Mozambique and stay in Mozambique for another week. Then return to J'burg on our own by bus/plane. Is that possbile within two weeks? We like to go diving in Mozambique but want to do that on our own as to be flexible and save costs. Any suggestions are more than welcome. Many thanks! Susanne

Hi Susanne I am a bit confused as to what you mean by 'safari'? The reason I ask is that of all the destinations in Southern Africa, Mozambique is one of the most unlikely places to take a safari if you're looking to see large animals reasonably conveniently and affordably. There are plenty of diving options off the Mozambiquean coastline, and there are a reasonable number of flights between Jo'burg and places like Inhambane or Bazaruto, so getting back under your own steam wouldn't be likely to be a problem. I'm also not sure what you mean by "one way": it would seem more logical to organise flights or other transport in both directions yourself, and find a local tour (safari) or lodge stay in Mozambique - unless perhaps you want the safari part to cover both S.Africa and Mozambique, so overland trip in that direction and return on your own. I take it you don't mean a bespoke safari, but are looking for a group tour you can join?

Thank you vor your quick response. Idea was to do a Safari, starting in J'burg to the NP nearby and end in Mozambique (that's why oneway) where we want to organize our own dives. So, basically: Is thos possible: 6 days Safari from J'burg to Mozambique and no return as we organize that on our own. And if you have any recommendation? Is it possible to do the Safari on our own, i.e. renting a car and just drive? Any experiences with that? 1000 thanks! Susanne

Hi Susanne Thanks for the clarification - I now understand why you were enquiring about 'one way' safaris. I am not aware of any safari companies that would routinely take guests on safaris to Kruger, transport them on to Mozambique and leave them there - it wouldn't make a lot of sense from an operational efficiency perspective. I am sure that you could get a safari company to customise such a package for you - but then this is almost sure not to be a 'budget' option. Transferring from Kruger directly to Mozambique is not straightforward, unless you have your own vehicle - in which case, you just continue driving on the N4 into Mozambique. From there, you could continue on either up or down the coast, depending on where you're planning to dive. Hiring your own car would also offer the advantage of allowing you to do a self drive trip into Kruger (which is very practical and the preferred option for many budget conscious travellers who find commercial safari packages too expensive). However, this option assumes that you're willing to drive in Southern Africa (you don't mention where you're from, but we drive on the left side of the road, like the UK): this is very straightforward in South Africa, but a little more challenging - but possible - in Mozambique. It also assumes that you are old enough to hire a vehicle at a reasonable price (there are higher tariffs for young people, just in case you fall into that category) and you'll have to make sure that your hire agreement allows you to take the car over the border and that you comply with all the Mozambiquean traffic regulations (their traffic authorities have regular road blocks and a reputation for being very stringent on minor issues, often as a way of soliciting a bribe). Another option would be to do the Kruger leg, return to Johannesburg and connect with a commercial dive package. Or - if you're willing to consider a destination other than Mozambique - head down to the KwaZulu Natal coast where there are many highly regarded dive sites. Hope this helps. Regards Cathy
