Are tire chains ever required on I 5 in and around Mt. Shasta? Also on SR 89? If so, for how long? hours? days? Thanks.

i lived in Mt.Shasta for 3 years and one time i was required to have chains to cross over Butte pass, by the afternoon most was cleared, but the evening before and morning it was unpassable. I miss Mt. Shasta, and at times wish i didn't move.
