We use booking.com and check reviews on tripadvisor.com. You could look at those and you can also type Moscow into the VT search window and then click on Hotels and Accommodations to see what VT members have recommended in Moscow. Also, be patient as VT covers all the time zones in the world so it can take 24 hours to get an answer. Here are the two web sites I use.

In fact, it depends on your concept of hotels and rates. You can start with Baltchug - right opposite the Kremlin and end with a hotel whose name I don't remember, but it is very close to the Kremlin, too, and will cost you just a fraction of what those pobpous International chains demand
