Hi, I'm flying to Marrakech on a 19 July for 10 days, I've been to Morocco before but not during Ramadan so I'm quite looking forward to experiencing it in a different way. Few questions though, will I be able to hire a guide or go on any trips? These things are draining, last time I went trekking in Atlas and I can't imagine how these guys would be able to do it not drinking and eating all day long. I was thinking about going to Sahara for a night, is it still possible? And also, since it's Ramadan should I stick to big cities? I wanted to go to Essaouira and Tamraght, any comments appreciated.
We toured Morocco during Ramadan about 15 years ago. We were only in the touristy areas of the cities and desert so I think we got a lot of slack. As I recall it was only really on the final day that we were asked not to eat publicly. Drinking wasn't an issue but it was winter so the temperatures were a lot lower. Also time changes things. I've read that Morocco is more observant now, but business is business and so generally tourists seem to be allowed more freedom than the locals.

we went during ramadan last year and had a tour up the atlas mountains - poor guy couldn't and didn't eat or drink all day - also the berber house where we stopped offered us tea but didn't join in - whether or not this was due to ramadan or something they always do was not made clear - also the hotel staff ( the ones who where muslim)worked all day without eating or drinking and entertained as also - sports etc - they al just seemed to take it in their stride and it didn't seem to much of a trouble to them to watch the guests enjoy food and drink all day enjoy marrakesh - we did

For Marrakech and Essaouira you will find plenty tourist restaurants and cafes open for breakfast and lunch. Try not to go out to eat your evening meal at the same time as Moroccans break their fast (sunset) you will have to wait until they have finished. If you are lucky enough to be invited to a breakfast, (evening meal) it would be impolite to refuse the invitation. If you go to the desert it would be advisable to take your own food and water as you might not find anywhere open. It is unlikely you will find many places selling alcohol except the more expensive restaurants.
