      Merida Mexico, neighborhood questions

      Mexico 7 hours ago

My wife and I plan to rent an apartment in Merida for one year. We are coming from Chicago (we are upper in our 40's) and would like a general overview of areas in the city. I understand my question is very general, but it will give a place to start . I have been told that the north side (Chuburna) is rather residential.

    • Late crossing to Holbox

Isla Holbox Feb 14, 2015 at 10:17 AM

Hi there - could anyone let me know if it will be possible to make a late crossing to Holbox.
Our flight arrives into Cancun at 19:00, so we expect to arrive into Chiquila at about 23:00, I've read on a few forums that you can pay a local fisherman to take you across. Is this safe and how readily available will they be? We are travelling mid November. I know people will say stay the night in Cancun and make the trip the next day, but we are very keen just to get to the island as our time there will be short and we don't want to waste another day travelling.

      any help would be appreciated.

    • Family of 6 moving to Mexico City- Need advise!

      Mexico City 8 hours ago

Hi all, we recently found out my there is a high likelihood we will be moving to Mexico city for a US Gov job at the Embassy. Though we are extremely excited for the adventure we are also a family of 6 with 4 school age children and I want to gather as much information as possible. We would be living there for 2-5 years. I have been told that many US Embassy employees live in Polanco but that it is a very "plastic" place. Condessa I hear is very nice as well. I want to totally be a part of the city and culture, my husband is Mexican and I am Peruvian/Spanish so it will not be a culture shock to us but I want to make it as easy a transition as possible for our children. I also have been told the children of US embassy employees go to private schools that are very demanding. We have been given a housing allowance up to $3500/usd a month, what type of home will that afford us? And how about vacation spots close by? We like to vacation a lot and would want to take advantage of being so close to Cancun and Acapulco. Any insight as to what to expect for a US family living in Mexico City (specifically US Gov employee) would be so helpful! Thanks in advance!

    • Apartment Rental

      Guanajuato Feb 8, 2015 at 4:05 PM

I will be studying in Guanajuato for a semester next January. I will need to find an apartment in the city that is close enough to the university. I wanted to know what I should expect to pay for a one bedroom furnished apartment and the best place to search for them. Also, is the city small enough that location does not really matter (in terms of walking to school)?

      Thanks much!

    • Driving/Renting a Car in the Yucatan at Night

Estado de Quintana Roo Feb 17, 2015 at 9:34 AM

Is it safe to drive around the Yucatan (Cancun to Valladolid, to Tulum, to Akumal, and back) at night? Our flights get in very late at night (around midnight) and leave very early in the morning (around 7am). We'd love to avoid having to stay in a hotel at the airport, but don't know if that's feasible as I've heard the roads are not very well lit and thus signs would be hard to follow--and we've never driven there before. We would plan on renting a car.

Speaking of which--does anyone have any good recommendations for the best/cheapest company to rent a car from at the Cancun airport? I've read that prices that American car rental companies quote online are only that cheap b/c they don't include the required insurance that you have to purchase. Any car rental advice would be great. Thanks!

    • Renting a car for a week?

Isla Cozumel Feb 4, 2015 at 11:15 AM

Hi, my family and I are planning to travel to Cozumel for a week long trip. We are looking into transportation options for our stay.

I understand there are plenty of taxis. However, we plan to make a trip around the Island of Cozumel visiting various sites including sites that are on the other side of the island which requires at least an hour commute or more.

Many of the tours you can book cost over $100US and we think that renting a car could be a better option for us and save us money. Renting a car would allow us to travel on our own time and pay on our own terms rather then spending hideous amounts just to drive somewhere to get a tour.

We don't plan to use the car to travel to Chichen Itza or Tulum. We will take tours to those to locations off the island.

What we would like to know if renting a car is a good idea or not. We have heard it is super dangerous to drive in Cozumel because drivers there show no mercy. We are very nervous about getting into an accident.

We also have questions regarding car insurance coverage in Mexico since all US policies do not cover out of the country vehicles.

Please, we need a variety of advice and pros/cons of why or why not.

We have already visited numerous sites as to why and why not but we are still at a stand still as to whether to depend on a taxi for everything we want to do or make it a do-it-yourself trip on the island.

For other details that might help to answer our plea for advice, there are 4 of us which taxis may or may not charge per person and the costs will add up.

Please, any advice from the pros and worldwide travelers!

      Best guided tours?

      Mérida Feb 3, 2015 at 3:55 AM

I'm going to Mérida at the end of February and I really want to visit Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Celestun. We don't feel like renting a car, so I'm looking for information or reviews on some of the tour operators based in Mérida. Right now, I'm looking at Mayan Ecotours, Ecoturismo Yucatan, and TuriTrans Mérida. Does anyone have experience with any of them? Or perhaps you have another company to recommend?

    • Moving to Mexico

by jerryjan Online Now Sep 18, 2011 at 2:24 PM

I moved from Mexico to Ecuador about 9 months ago. While Ecuador is nice, it doesn't compare to Mexico for a multitude of reasons. I lived in Ajijic in the Lake Chapala area and don't want to return to that area - not that I didn't love it but I'm looking for a little more of an adventure and a place that doesn't have a high cost of living because so many gringos live there. That being said, what I've read about Morelia sounds very interesting. Would someone be willing to write about rental homes, apartments, what it's like living there, etc.

I do have a little concern about moving to a city where there are few gringos - I don't want to be too lonely. I am learning Spanish but I'm a long way from fluent and I would continue lessons in Morelia. Are there places where gringos gather to get to know one another?

Thank you so much for any info you are willing to offer.

I have just become aware that one of the zoo elephants may in fact be Jobie, the baby that I took care of at the Los Angeles Zoo 45 years ago. How do I find out about her temperament, her health, and possibly visiting to see if she remembers me? Is there any information I can provide to her current caretakers about her very early care?

planning time to visit colonial cities around Guanajuato

by oslocairo Online Now Aug 24, 2010 at 10:09 AM

I am planning a trip where I will stay in a hostel in Guanajuato and will have 9 days of visiting time. Since I am making Guanajuato my home base, I would like to visit other cities near by as day trips.

I know nothing about these places, but realize, at least that some are smaller than others and of course, and perhaps several could be visited in one day, while others would take several days.

Nonetheless, I am on a limited budget and so must return to Guanajuato to sleep. Also, I do not have a car, so would likely take a bus.

With that in mind, What are your recommendations? My thought was the following: Guadalajara ( I know, more than one day, but possibly city center highlights?), Queretaro, Morelia/ Patzuaro, Zacatecas. San Luis Potosi, Aquaclaientes,San Miguel de Allende. I have read that Dolores Hidalgo is very important historically, but architecturally, not of that much interest, but I am not sure.

I assume I will spend 3 days or so seeing Guanajuato as well and can, of course see it in small chunks of time each day as well. I have a lot of energy and don't mind long days, but am I just crazy to try to see all of this in my short time?

      I really appreciate your help.

      Thank you for any suggestions.

How far from Mexico City is Morelia?

by lunabelle Online Now Jul 5, 2004 at 9:31 AM

I am planning a trip to Mexico in late August. The plan is to fly into MexCity, take a bus to Guadalajara, spend the night, take a bus to Puerto Vallarta, spend 6 nights, take bus to Morelia, spend one night, and then take a bus to Mexico city to fly out at 2pm. Is this a good plan? Is Morelia close enough to Mexico City to get a bus from Morelia in the morning and arrive on time for our flight out?

monarch butterflies during New Year Eve celebrations?

by marktynernyc Online Now Nov 23, 2003 at 1:08 PM

Thinking of going to Morelia for New Years ( have heard it's a beautiful colonial Spanish Baroque city) I'm also interested in seeing the monarch butterfly preserve which is about 2 hrs from Morelia. Have read the butterflies colonies are at their peak in February. Does anyone have any experience with the butterflies around new year's? I was thinking about Gaudalarja for New Year's also - but I 'm gravitating towards something a bit less urban. Any comments or thoughts appreciated.
