HI This is a general question about shopping in CR, do you barter as in Mexico? Thanks for help we are heading to CR in 5 days.
I think that bartering is acceptable in some of the shops. I had some luck with this in a little gift shop for a Tribal Ax that I wanted for my son. It was all hand made and beautifully carved with a large quartz crystal for a blade. The price was marked75.00 US and I offered50.00 US cash which was readily accepted. The shopkeeper did specify cash only, otherwise I don't think he would have budged on the price. Note: When we boarded the plane for our return flight it was confiscated as a weapon, rewrapped and put with the rest of the luggage in the baggage compartment. Surprisingly it made it back to Detroit with the rest of our bags unscathed; this proves how efficient American Airlines is in Costa Rica. Gotta love those people! Happy Travels!

You can but politeness dictates that once the shopkeeper gives you a better price you should buy what you are bartering for.
