Weather in April

by Wafro Online Now Nov 6, 2011 at 8:17 AM

Hello everybody, April should be one of the wettest months of the year in Kenya, but does it rain during the day or at night, can you compare it with the tropical rains (rain all day long) in central Africa? I’m planning a Mombassa trip in April and it is too long ago for me to remember the local climate. Is it OK to plan a beach and safari holiday during this period??? Thanks fellow travellers.

Hi, The Long Rains are historically April, May and into June, with April and May the rainiest months. Like everywhere though these days the old certainties about weather don't necessarily apply. In practice, particularly at the coast, even in the rainy season it does not usually rain all day or even every day. The showers tend to be relatively short but torrential, often in the late afternoon or overnight, and they can be very localised, it can be raining on one beach and fine on another a few miles away. Many people happily take beach and safari holidays in April.

The weather patterns are nowadays hard to predict(Global warming ,i guess). It may rain at night or Day. But in Mombasa the weather might be abit more different as there may not be mach rains then, so go ahead and plan to go to the beach, let not the rain slow you down . i think you can start with the safari and finish with the beach.

at the coast the month with most rain is usually May, so depending on when you go in April you should be fine. And even if it rains, it´s mostly in the night or morning hours. Lots of sunshine to enjoy otherwise. A beach holiday should not be a problem. As for safari, it depends... if there were some really heavy rains just before you go and while you are there, the road conditions will be difficult (but I suppose you won´t do the driving yourself) and yes, if you are caught in a tropical downpour on safari, you will not see much during that time. It´s just a wall of water. But again, it usually does not rain all day long, nor every day.
