I am currently planning a get away to Miyakojima. I'm thinking to rent a condo, but I want to know how important it is to have a car on the island. It's not very large... are bikes good enough to get around, supplemented with Taxis? Or should I just give in and rent a car?
I don't think you need to rent a car for the entire time. You can rent a bikes from 1000yen/day, taxi/cabs are easy to arrange, and if you need to rent a car for a couple of days, there are many shops you can go to make the arrangements once you are there.

We stayed at one of the "Minsyuku" there. The time there was as convenient as expected for a small island. You'll have a great time. Do you plan to dive there? Even if you don't stay at a big hotel, you can use their booking services, etc., if needed.
