Commuting to work in Minneapolis

by flyguy03 Online Now Jul 6, 2006 at 10:35 PM

Hi I just got a job with an airline in Minneapolis. I live in southern california now and I will be commuting to work a few times a month. I am wondering what are some good areas to look for housing in. I am trying not to buy a car so I would need to be some place close to shopping and the rail. Thanks

Here is a link to the light rail (the only rail) in Minnesota http://www.metrotransit.org/rail/ Looking at the stops available, not too many of which are in residential areas, I would suggest looking around the 50th St./Minnehaha Park stop. Good luck!

The Train Runs Along Hiawatha Ave., to Downtown and to the Mall of America. I think if you want to be on the train, you would live downtown, in South Mpls. or E. Bloomington. South Mpls. There has been a lot of development along the train line. Lucky for you it drops you off in an beautiful underground station at the Lindburg Term. The area of South Minneapolis is mainly residential. The neighborhood is mostly WWI era bungalows. Hiawatha was planned to be a freeway back in the 60's. They condemmed some houses for the right of way and never built the freeway. This means that there are some new construction, single family homes flanking Hiawatha. There has been alot of transit-orientated condo developments along the rail line. These condos offer maintenence free living, and would be secure when you'r not in town. There is basic shopping, but it's fairly spread out. I don't know if you could get easily by without a car, but I could be plausible. (some businesses in the area: standish-ericsson.org/busine... Downtown The rail line runs along 5th street. There are alot of condos being built here. Especially along the river and around the Metrodome. Two Lund's groceries are being built. One is across the river from Dtwn. on university Ave. (Open Nov. 06') The Other is on 12th and Hennepin (open 2007). Whole Foods also planned for Hennepin and Washington. There is alot of retail downtown. Especially on Nicollet Mall. Close to Central Libary, Guthrie Theater, Metrodome. Lots of condos. Many price ranges. Ive lived here my whole life, and I don't recognize parts of Dtwn. Area is rapidly developing. (A good site to understand Dtwn. housing & development: metrocouncil.org/planning/la... Bloomington There is some limited development near the Mall of America. There is limited everyday shopping (Can't buy dinner at Underwater World). The area is bounded by freeways, so a car would likely be necessary. Closest stations to the airport. A good site for Mpls. real estate in general is edinarealty.com Hope this was of help Welcome to Minneapolis
