Sandflies on Milford Track in May

by MJThomas Online Now Mar 16, 2008 at 1:30 AM

Hi
Everyone has been warning me about the sandflies on the Milford Track and saying we should take insect repellent (which we would anyway) but what are the sandflies like in May? Are they still around or is it starting to get too cool for them?
Thanks.

Depends on the weather. If it is mild you get annoyed by the sandflies even in winter. I would always carry insect repellent in my backpack. You will have no problems if it is very cold, windy, in rain, and in dense bush - but as soon as you get to a clearing, a river bank or a lake they will attack you, if the weather conditions are not as described.

I would say theat there could be sandflies most times of the year. Lets just say Sand Fly Point is not called that for nothing. Anywhere you stop on the last day you may get eaten alive so cover yourself in repellent before you stop anywhere.
