change location

The Avenue by Hobbema

by peterbluegrass Online Now Mar 15, 2012 at 1:19 PM

Can anyone please tell me if the location where Hobbema
painted the Avenue from is known ?

I have been entranced by this picture since I first saw it many many years ago and would like to visit Middelharnis in April when I am coming to Holland for the Floriade.

At first glimps I think it's at the Steneweg (Stone Road).

I'll dig deeper into this matter tonight.

The Steneweg indeed is the spot, but the village has expanded and you won't see the same view as the painter did. Many hoiuse and new trees are blocking the view onto the Church.

The Steneweg enters the village from the South, what makes sense: Thw sun in the back for the best colours.

I hope you will be able to somehow get the same setting and take a picture of the church, but my guess is it will be hard.

The Church is called St Michael or Grote Kerk.

It started as a Catholic church but during the Reformation the building was taken over by the Dutch Reformed church.

There have been 2 church fires, the last one in 1948 when the organ was destroyed. The church was rebuild and now is a monument, that means that no alterations to the original layout are allowed.

There might have been some changes after Hobbema painted the church, but none dramatical ones.
