My partner is going to be at a conference in Puebla for 4 days in early june and we are trying to plan travel for about 2.5 weeks travel on top of this. We will be two couples and also have 3 young children with us. We want to experience as much as possible and happy to be very busy but would like to finish off with 5 days being lazy on a beautiful beach somewhere. any suggestions much appreciated? thanks
With two and a half weeks in Mexico you'll have time for both cultural travel and spending time on the beach. I've seen on your travel pages that you have been to Mexico City and nowhere else in the country; since your partner is going to work at Puebla that city is a great place to start it has a lot of things to see including some beautiful churches and colonial buildings. There are many things to see in all the country, but I'll guess you want to make a route starting in Puebla and finishing on the beach so I'll suggest places around this idea. After Puebla you could visit the near town of Cholula, it is also a colonial town famous for it's church and also for a prehispanci temple that somehow got unnoticed by the spanniards in such a way that they built a church over it and now you can see both the catholic and prehispanic temple together. Also near Puebla you can visit two archeological zones called Cacaxtla, famous for some beautiful mural paintings, and Xochitecatl, the oldest city in the zone and mostly unnoticed by foreigners. You can also visit the city of Tlaxcala, one of the smallest capital cities in the country. Other near by places you can go to is Atlixco. Leaving the zone around Puebla you have two choses, the first one would be going to the State of Veracruz, in that case you can make a first stop in Orizaba wich is a beautiful town I know, and make quick trips to the nearby cities of Córdoba and Fortín de las Flores. From Orizaba the buses to those two spots would cost you no more tnat20. From here you can go to Xalapa, capital of the state and also very nice city with much XIX century architecture and a famous archeological museum, as well as some green areas to walk around, is a nice place but remember it's rainy most of the time; from here you can easily reach Veracruz, the biggest city in the state and most important port in Mexico, it also has a historical downtown, a aquarium and beaches, the most meautiful are on the neighbour municipality of Boca del Rio. The second chose would be going to Oaxaca, also a very interesting colonial city and surrounded by many zapotec and mixtec archeological zones of wich Monte Albán and Mitla are only the most famous, from Oaxaca you can travel by either plane or bus to one of tow famous beach destinations in Mexico, Puerto Escondido or Huatulco.
