How much time do I need to gp from Cancun to Chichen Itza?

by Leo2006 Online Now Sep 30, 2007 at 6:16 AM

Hi, I will stay in Cancun one week. I want to travel to Chichen-Itza and to other main piamides (Uxmal, Tola?). How can I do it by bus, by plane? How much time do I need to visit Chichen-Itza, Uxmal, and Tola with relative comfort? How long it takes from Cancun to all three main Maya sites on Yukatan (if one do it as day/2 days trips)? Do I need to stay overnight in Merida, or can Ido all three trips from Cancun? Leo

I went there from our hotel near Playa del Carmen, on a bus. By a tour bus it took us 2 hours to get there and we had only about 2 hours to be there, because they combine Chichen Itza site and meals after and swiming in cenotes... So, I didn't have a chance to see everything there and I wish I could go there by car and stay all day... Even though it is very hot walk under the sun all day long, it is good I assume to leave early from hotel and arrive at Chichen Itza before 11AM. The main pyramide has another one inside, so if you plan to go up: it's about 30 min, but for the inside (Moon) pyramide you will need more time. Second time i was in Cancun we rented a car and managed to visit Tulum and Coba in one day, and came back before 7PM.

Hi Leo, You don't need a plane. Buses are very confortable and economic on this area. Ride a Mayab or ADO, those are super, bring a light sweater in case the a/c is set up too cold for you. No kidding. You can search online by using www.ticketbus.com.mx or http://www.adogl.com.mx/en/index.htm By Tola, I am guessing you meant Tulum, Coba? Tulum is closer to you on the mayan riviera, it's worth the visit! you can ride the bus and return the same day, Tulum is an arch. site and also a town in the map. Coba is also on the mayan riviera area... Chichen Itza is half way to Merida, near a town named Piste. Uxmal is in the South West of the Yucatan State. It's a bit hard to visit both the same day, but you can visit Chichen if you ride a bus from Cancun early in the morning, explore the site and ride the bus going to Merida. Spend the night in Merida, you can try the following guide for hotels www.yucatantoday.com Then, visit the CAME Bus terminal in downtown, if you show up very early, you can take one of the tours to Uxmal and the puuc zone (Labna, Kabah, Sayil y Xlapac) or you can ride the bus directly ot Uxmal - then, return to Merida and travel at night to Cancun and continue exploring the Mayan Riviera and their Archaeology sites in one day trips. In the case of Chichen Itza, the bus drops you exactly in the parking lot in the Archaelogy site, and you can buy your ticket in advance right there and it will pick you up almost exactly where it dropt you originally. In the case of Uxmal, the bus will drop you near the entrance, sometimes you will need to ask the driver to tell you when he passes by Uxmal.. just tell him.. Uxmal? in case you don't speak any spanish. To leave the site and return to the city, you only need to walk to the road, it's a very short walk, then cross to the other side and wait for the bus to pass and pick you up. Enjoy the trips!!!
