Where to get ROAD and WEATHER conditions before a car trip?

by alza Online Now Oct 10, 2006 at 9:21 AM

Ciao all, I'll be driving a rented car from Veracruz to Mexico City return next week, always in daylight. I have the maps & I've travelled that way & back twice, by bus. BUT I live in Veracruz, the region is affected by heavy rainfall & I'm looking for up-to-date information on road conditions. Also would like to know a good source for online & constantly updated weather conditions. I can't phone a number to get that info, as I would at home. I have cable TV but haven't seen what I'm looking for on any channels. Best for me would be an ONLINE source, please let me know if there is one. I was planning to take the autopista Veracruz-Cordoba-Puebla-Mexico D.F. but a cab driver told me it's very affected by recent heavy rains, all the way to Puebla. He suggested I drive to Xalapa, then take Federal Highway to Perote, Zacatepec & Acatzingo (Fed.140), to join autopista to Puebla there. The Road Map shows I can also go from Perote to Zacatepec, then head slightly WEST to get Fed. 129 to Amozoc, which is closer to Puebla than Acatzingo is. Which Federal Highway is the best in your view? I want to avoid deserted mountain roads & would like to use a road that is well serviced. (Of course, I will take the autopista if I find the cab driver exaggerated the bad road conditions.) Basically, I'd like to know how Mexican drivers prepare for car trips. Thanks in advance!

thanks PJ. I explored the link & their "Trace Your Route" tab is good in that it lets you put in 2 additional points between Origin and Destination. The thing is, I already have route tracers and lots of maps. I didn't see any tab with present road & weather conditions (read just about everything). I really hope someone living in Mexico who drives a lot will see this. You have to have travelled on huge long-distance busses across the sierras here to know that some highway can look like an earthquake just happened, and this in a very short time span. Think I'll go ask at the Long-distance Bus Terminal...

How do Mexicans prepare for car trips? One tank of gas. Two tequilas. Three bullets into the pistol. Four or more backseat passengers Five hail Marys.

LOL melosh! tks Pedro. by the way, I had checked out your Homepage here before posting. I'll have a look at the satellite images closer to departure time. For everyone's benefit who may be driving in these parts soon, Pedro reminded me in an email that the Perote area is usually very misty. I visited there last year and it WAS misty all the time, I'd forgotten that. I'll examine all options until departure but I think I may go for the autopista -- unless I'm told by experienced drivers here that it is in bad shape. Right now, I only have the opinion of one cab driver on this.

Alza, did you manage to get the route? Ops, I think it's maybe too late but I am curious. Not lately the Mex/Toluca autopista suffered weather problems, so it was closed and when that happens you must find alternative routes, sometimes diffult one. Please, feed back if you got something...

Hi Gatopardo! Just came home from 2 days bus travelling in the State of Veracruz, all types of roads including autopista. The autopista looked fine between Veracruz Puerto and Orizaba and I've decided to get to El D.F. by the autopista all the way. Btw, I was near Cofre de Perote this morning and it was misty around the top, though the day is clear and sunny all around. Tks for mentioning Toluca. I won't be driving on that side on Thursday, however. thanks to everyone too!
