How safe is Mexicali for a Tourist?

Aside from the posting I read regarding crossing the streets in Mexicali, can anyone tell me if Mexicali is safe to walk in during daylight hours during regular business hours? Spacifically, are there any places or areas that I need to stay away from because of safety problems? How are the taxis or other public transportation? Is there any other issues/problems/cocerns that may be helpful? Thank you in advance! WMN
