The monasteries and the physicalities

by Ianbaz Online Now Feb 4, 2013 at 1:24 PM

Am planning a visit and whilst reasonably fit for a 72yr old how does one reach monasteries--is it stairs or a steep path hate to get there and just stare up at them

Some of them has a lot of stairs, but others can be visited almost without any stairclimbing so you should go ahead and do it. I have visited Meteora as a tour leader with groups of people, many of them older than 72, who had walking problems and they enjoyed the place. Just be prepared that some monestaries will be hard to visit for you, but as others are easy to walk to then you should still have an enjoyable trip.

You have 6 monestaries and you should try to organise some transport inbetween them or you will be walking a few kilometers up and down mountains to see them. You should be able to visit most of them as long as you drive to the entrance.

Yes, Kalambaka is the town to rent a car and also a good place to stay overnight as it has many hotels in all price ranges.

You could look for your accomodation in Kastraki. This is the village at the foot of the Meteoras. I think the most difficult monastery to reach for you is the Roussanou monastery. It is inside a wood and there are lots of stairs to get to it. It is nice and small. To get to the Great Meteoron; the biggest monastery there is a public bus from Kastraki and Kalambaka if my memory serves me well. I loved the Meteoras area and I hope to re visit it soon.

Most are walkable, and there are stairs to climb. If you rent a car, it. Is great to stop by the roadside and pickup some of their great sausage they make there. To this day, I have never tasted a sausage like the ones I had around Meteora . Then at a nearby village, they had the best cheese and honey with yogurt . Cheers tommy x

have in mind that monasteries are not open to visitors every day, some are closed on tuesday, some on friday, some on thursday so monday, wednesday, saturday and sunday are the best days to catch many of them

http://www.greecetravel.com/meteora/ In Kalambáka or Kastráki you can buy a guide called: The foothpaths of meteora, written by Antonis Kalogirou ( nice, the name means from the monk)with nice foto's and a detailed map. I spend 3 days some years ago, so I coud visit all the monasteries on foot. There are also caves from hermits. Maria

Also, be aware that when you rent a car, you must return it to the rental place, not drop it off elsewhere or you face a HUUUGE drop-off fee. It is NOT like the USA, or European countries where mjor rental companies have fleets in many cities, and cars constantly on the move between them. By contrast, in Greece, if you leave a car in another town, typically the company must send another car, with 2 people in it, to go fetch the car & bring it back to the "home" city. In other words, you cannot rent in Kastraki and drop off in Delphi or in Athens. Most people rent in Athens, drive to both places then return to athens. Only place in all of Greece that I know of, where you can drop off at different place and not have a large add-on fee is the Island of Crete.

Yes PJ I researched some local car rentals in the area and they say just that and one company said you pay for fuel in car BEFORE you take car. Rented cars several times in USA,UK ,Germany & France as well as home here in Australia and never had that happen. Then some thought i must give Thanks for your alert
