Hi, I am travelling on a four day tour in mid/late August that arrives in Meteora in the evening (from Delphi) and has the Monday morning in Meteroa before heading back to Athens. I don't think this will be enough time to really see Meteora so I was thinking of staying longer and making my way back to Athens by myself. Plan A - stay for the afternoon and then catch the 5.32pm train back to Athens on that day (i.e. one full day to see Meteora) Plan B - stay the afternoon and the following day and then catch the 5.32pm train back to Athens (i.e. two full days to see Meteora) How long do you think I need to look at the monastries? Are there other sights that I should take the time to see in the area? Are the trains running at the moment? Thanks
Correction: the tour has *Sunday* morning in Meteora and then heads back to Athens.

In summer season 6 monasteries can be visited (5 off season). I do not know what might hold your interest and how many monasteries you can get in a day to advice, this is up to you. A lot depend on if you want to check a monastery that is closed at the day of your visit too (Monasteries have different off days and schedules each). Note that some walking/hiking is required to reach the monasteries, and in August, many tour groups will be around, so more waiting time etc. At the spot, Meteora monasteries are the attraction, there are some more old churches in Kalambaka, and of course often people go in the area only to hike or climb the rocks. There are interesting spots in the wider area, but your own transport and more days are required or this lol Personally I think Meteora worth an overnight, if anything, just to see the place at sunset light , take a walk (and some pictures) and "feel" the place without the crowds... But this is just me, it is your call depending on your traveling style. I think you will find all you need on those links, especially the first one: kalampaka.com/en/meteora/mon... http://www.meteora-greece.com/ Trains are running at the moment, where you obtained the train schedules from? Check trainose website!

A good reply from the previous poster! I would add to this by saying that there are many steps for you to climb to reach the monasteries. Of course they are worth it! I looked around two of them over 5 hours (including the drive betweeen those two and the climbing up and down) and I wished that I could have seen some of the others. I would have liked to stay overnight. The Hotel Meteora would have been my choice. There are lots of black & white photos of the monasteries and the people around them. My favourite was of the priest being placed in a net so that he could be winched up to the top of the rocky outcrop. Would I return there again? Yes! There are some photos on my travel page for Volos. Click on the photo of the peacock and go to my travel pages if you wish.

I'd stay three days at Meteoras area. So that you'll be able to visit all the monasteries at leisure.

Thanks for the replies. They are very helpful. I will be there on the Sunday so I think that all the monasteries will be open? Either that or they are all closed. I am ok with walking and hiking. Not terribly keen on queues but that's what I get for going to Greece in August I think. trainose.gr was the site I used for the train timetable (once I had figured out how to get the English version). I've looked those other sides too and have them saved - but its hard to figure out how much time you need from websites. I think I will find out what time the tour arrives the night before and if it is late, I will stay the extra night. Thanks for the photos crazyman2. Three days would be great, but unfortunately I have a plane to catch.

There should be a bus to the main monastery from Kastraki or Kalambaka.

Hi everyone, We are going to Greece 08/31 (arrive 9am)- 09/07 (leave at 11am) and we want to drive to Delphi from the airport, then to Meteora from there and then back to Athens to visit acropolis. Do any of you know how far/safe these drives are (Airport to Delphi, Delphi to Meteora, and Meteora to Acropolis). Also would 1 night in Delphi and 1 night in Meteora be enough to at least see a couple of the main areas? We are going to Santorini for 2 nights so we don't have too much time left. We might drop Meteora but we don't know when/if we will ever be back to Greece so we would really, love to see Meteora. Thank you everyone for your help :)
