You can take a two day tour from Athens to visit Meteora and the monasteries.

There should be a driect bus from Athens to Kastraki and to Kalambaka. Kastraki is the village right below the Meteoras.

The best way is to follow an organized tour (either 1/day or 2/days). The 1st reason is that the monasteries have strict visiting hours and if you try to go by public transport (bus or train and taxi), you will spend a lot of your time for nothing. The 2nd reason is that the tour-guide gives also interesting information. The 1/day tour is very tight, better follow a 2/days tour, but it depends also on how much time of your vacation schedule you can spend for this visit.

Yes, Kalambaka is the town to rent a car and also a good place to stay overnight as it has many hotels in all price... more
In summer season 6 monasteries can be visited (5 off season). I do not know what might hold your interest and how many... more
