The ship tours and almost all the Etna day tours I can find from Messina seem to go to the Silvestri spent craters and that's it. I want to go up higher and see more cool volcano stuff! There are bus tours from the North and at Sapienza in the South there are cable cars and other bus tours. These are the types of things I want to do. Does anyone know if such a tour is possible from Messina on about about a 7 hour max time frame? can start a tour around 10:300-11:00am and must be back by 6:00pm.
We've stayed at Hotel CORSARO that sits at an altitude of 2,000 metres on the south side of the volcano. From there you may go to the upper part of the volcano. You first take a cable car ride then take a 4X4 drive to reach the place where guides escort people on foot to interesting areas of the vulcano, around the active craters (maybe at 3,000 or 3,100m). We've started at 10am and did the return to Rifugio Sapienza on foot and arrived at around 4pm. This site describes a tour possible from Messina www.toursbylocals.com/MtEtnaShoreExcursion but they estimate the tour can take 8h.
