Mapquest shows driving time from the Tusayan, AZ to Cortez, Colorado as 4 1/2 hours. Does this seem accurate? How long does it take to take a detour to the Four Corners Monument?
That's about right. You have to go through the park (GCNP) though, which slows you down a bit. Four Corners is right off the highway and doesn't take long to see. It's a plaque with some Native American shops around it. If you have time, you may want to consider a side trip up to Monument Valley but, from your other posts, it sounds like you won't have time.

On your way do not go by Desert View without a look.

If you have the time you could make a little side trip off of Hwy 160 and go to Navajo National Monument (sw of Kayenta) and/or Monument Valley (ne of Kayenta). This would eat up the day so it would probably be best to spend the night in lovely downtown Kayenta and head to Mesa Verde the following day. It will take 30-40 minutes to get into the heart of the park from Cortez. It is very much worth a visit. It is the only national park in the US that is dedicated to the works of man; all the other national parks are dedicated to works of nature.
