Travelling from Linz to Vienna by rail, I thought I might like to stop-off in Melk for about 4 hours to see the old town and abbey. Is it within walking distance? Is it a recommended stop? Is 4 hours about right? Thanks
Hi ! Not every train stops in Melk - better check on www.oebb.at the abbey is in a distance of 10-15 minutes to walk and a stop of 4 hours should be enough to see the small village, the old post-office and the monastery. Maybe you want to continue by ship to Duernstein and finally take the train from Duernstein to Vienna. This part of the Danube is simply beautiful and ships run very frequently. For infos and pic, maybe have a look on my pages about Krems an der Donau Aggstein Duernstein Melk good luck ! Michael
