I enjoyed my stay at The Nunnery - just outside the city centre and nice and quiet.

The Nunnery is opposite Carlton Gardens and Melbourne Museum. Great location but it is on main road with tram so may want to try and get room at the back. Fitzroy is one of the best areas in Melbourne for kicking back and experiencing Melbourne - Brunswick and Smith Streets run parallel to the east and are definitely worth spending time. www.nunnery.com.au/ Other thoughts are Habitat and Base, both in St Kilda. Both more of a destination as in beachside suburb and again, place to kick back. Base is funky, something of a place to hang out, great bar. loads of info available - 'backpackers' in Australia/NZ have a better status than the rest of the world and as this is marketed as a backpackers hostel, it's good. 5 minutes from the beach. stayatbase.com/ Similarly, good reports for Habitat, a few minutes further away from Base from the beach. www.habitathq.com.au/
