8D7N in Melbourne

by Malaysianseniors Online Now Mar 25, 2013 at 6:40 PM

We are senios of 60+, will be in Melbourne for 7 nights in late October 2013, & plan to see most of the must-see in and around Melbourne. We are thinking of 2 alternatives:
(1) Book accommodation on our own & buy 1-day or 2-days trips to go out of Melbourne, or
(2) Buy a package including accommodation & day tours from a tour agent.
Which one will be a better choice? Please advise. Thanks.

I would highly recommend a day tour to Phillip Island, including the Penguin tours, and possibly a 1 or 2 day tour of the Great Ocean Road.

Late october is spring racing carnival. Accomodation is hard to find. Also being seniors you might not want be involved in the hustle and bustle of the general public. My advice is to go for the package. Let others do the hard work for you in a high tourist period.

    My opinion:

Book accommodation asap. Yes, the Spring Racing carnival is on,  but most punters tend to congregate around the track. You have plenty of choices regarding day trips. Most hotels will have tours arranged, or at least give you indications of tours available. Book the tours yourself. The Great Ocean Road Trip is great, and they do one or two day trips (by luxury coach). By booking your pwn tours, you have the choice, and flexibilty. It will also be more cost effective.

But............if the cost is not a problem, and you feel more secure doing your second option......then go for it.

Hi, I have made a few trips to Melbourne using either travel agent for hotel and tours or done it all by myself. You can make a hotel reservation online (as I did last Feb.) and I also made reservation for daytour Phillip Island. I recommend combo tour Puffing Billy + Churchill Island + Phillip Island (Koalas and Penquins). This is a whole day tour, but you will see some of the best sights. You can also go to the Federation Square as it is a starting point for daytours. You will find a Melb. Tourist Info (they assist for tours) and offices of tour companies. Either way it works fine, but you must know which tour company use for an internet bookings. If you go to the Tourist Info you will find a good selection of brochures and personel will help you choosing a right tour. A tip: Choose Penquin+ option if you want to see little penquins real close as they come from sea.

If you were from a large country, like the USA or Canada, I would probably recommend a "do it yourself" approach. However, given the distances and travel involved, as well as the busy accommodation at that time of year, maybe a package deal would be easier for you.

Option 1 is what I would go for, but book your hotel asap. First port of call in Melbourne should be to the huge tourist office in Federation Square where you will find just about every tour you can think of - and a few more as well!! You will be spoilt for choice. Don't know where you are from, but if you like cricket I would highly recommend a trip to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and if you are from the UK, how about a trip to see where 'Neighbours' is filmed. Silly, I know, but who cares?!!!! Melbourne is very 'doable' and you'll have a great time.
Can I carry your suitcases please?!

Melbourne city itself can be easily done via the free tram/bus so I would say book your own hotels and travel within city on your own. As for the day trips, you can book for the Great Ocean Tour and Puffing Billy/Penguin Island tours easily. There will lots of tour agencies to choose from.

If you are interested in wine we have some fantastic wineries in the yarra valley which is about 1hr out of Melbourne. Visit Domaine Chandon and other iconic wineries. There are many tour operators doing these tours this is just one.

Thanks all of you for the very useful suggestions. We are actually quite flexible in our travelling time. We choose end of October because we thought that is the best time with best weather. We are also flowers lovers and we thought Spring might be the best time to see the bloooms in the gardens in Melbourne and places around. Will welcome suggestion for other time with good weather, flowers blooming everywhere, and not so busy with festivals or events. Pleae advise. Thank you very much..

Mid- September to early October is best time for what you want to see and do. Just book accommodation asap. Your day trips can be booked on arrival

Yes, we are very keen to go to GOR. But we feel that the 1 day GOR trip will be too long a day trip and tiring for us. Try to search for 2 days 1 night GOR tour package with more comfortable accommodation mid-way along the GOR. Any suggestion? We found that most of the overnight GOR tours offer campsite or dormitory style of accommodation more suitable for young trevellers :)

If you want to see flowers in Australia, during September and October there are very good escorted bus tours run out of Perth of several days duration. You can see the the Australian Wild flowers in full bloom. Alternatively A very good flower show occurs in the old exhibition building grounds in Melbourne every March. The weather is usually very moderate during this month. It has only just started to get cool in the evenings this year in the last week of March.
