Day trips from Dresden - What to see?

by highmeadowhiker Online Now Jun 28, 2009 at 2:54 PM

The rail trip from Dresden is short enough to make our visits to Meissen roundtrip day trips only. Other than the porcelain factory, what are the sehenswuerdigkeiten? What is your advice regarding the Elbe trip via ship?

The castle in first place. stadt-meissen.de/content/276... > What is your advice regarding the Elbe trip via ship? saechsische-dampfschiffahrt.... Upstream from Dresden is the most interesting part. saechsische-schweiz.de/start... Best is a combination of one way by boat the other way by train. Otherwise you loose too much time. There are plenty of sightseeing options you can combine with a boat trip.

Meissen is one of the oldest towns of Germany and is situated about 20 km Northwest of Dresden. The town is dominated by the "Albrechtsburg" and the Cathedral. The first one was built in the 15th century; the oldest parts of the church are from 1260 !! From the hill there are wonderful views over the River Elbe and the town with its red roofs and narrow winding roads with some interesting shops. The market place has some nice restored houses and a gothic town hall. Another "must see" activity is the famous porcelain factory. For more info about Saxony see my page. Or look into my page :-) "Meißen - 1000 years of history" - Meißen by german_eagle I did the boat trip from Dresden to Meißen and thought it is quite scenic, too. Best is to take the 9.45 am steamboat to Meißen, arrival 11.45 am.
