Dear friends, I will be visiting Medan early next year for 5 days. Can someone please help me to plan an itinery? I'd like to include Lake Toba, a flee market selling handicraft as well. Any backpack area and hotel in Medan? Thank you ckpeng
The closest thing to a backpack area is next to the grand mosque, Hotel Zakia, Hotel Residence, Wisma Ronna's, Jalan SM Raja No. 34. residencehotelmedan.com/inde... To Lake Toba / Parapat about 6 hour by bus or minibus, and ferry to Tuk Tuk. The largest amount of handicraft stalls is probably in Parapat. 5 day´s New Delhi Jaipur and Agra is doable but will be hard work

Hello I dont think you will have enough time to visit Toba especially if you plan to stay overnight and enjoy the lake. You will only have about 2 days in medan. Brian

Hi CKPeng, One of the best places to stay in Medan with back packers these days is Blue Angel. Here is a website created by an Australian guy on accomodation in Sumatra. http://www.sumatra-indonesia.com/ Information on Blue Angel sumatra-indonesia.com/bluean... Personally would not stay at Zakia's. As you have 5 days in Medan you will have plenty of time to visit Samosir Island on Lake Toba. Bus trip usually takes 4 hrs from my previous experience though I have read where some travellers have experience 5 hr trips. If you stay at Blue Angel they will be able to give you all the details of where to catch the mini bus to Prapat where you will get the ferry to Samosir Island. It is a good idea to know where you would like to stay so you can tell the ferry driver where to drop you off. I have maps of accomodation in Tuk Tuk Lake Toba and a map of Medan etc if you would like. My email address is pamela_fuge@yahoo.com.au On Samosir Island you can hire a motor bike by yourself or get an ojek and go around the island for the day - wonderful experience - did that in 2004. Two days is more than enough on the island and you can stop off in Brestagi on the way back if you like. Nice cool area less than 2 hrs from Medan. So from my experience of 9 trips to Indonesia I would say you have plenty of time to visit Lake Tobaa, Brestagi and Medan in 5 days. Pamela.
