Planing visit Saudi Arabia For Umra

Hi I am planing to visit Saudi Arabia For Umra from Europe, I would like to have some Advise. Is it Possible to Travel to Saudi Arabia without going trough a Agent. The Travel-agent aske mee to pay for the Vise too, According to the SA-Embassy there Visas is free. I heard that If have a Hotel Reservation in Mecca it should not bee a problem to get a Visa from the Embassy, Othervise it has to go throug a travel agent. I would like to hear any Recomendation for good Hotels or apartment in Mecca. Any adress or Website link wil be appreciated. If there are othe thing I have to be Aware off I will happy to hear about. When is the next Period for Umra starting. Thanks in Advance
