Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a forum entry for McAllen before. The city itself isn't much of a tourist destination except for lots of retired "snowbirds" who come down from the Northern states to escape the cold. The best place to cross over to visit Mexico is Progreso, which is about 15 miles to the East. Even though the border crossing at Reynosa is closer, it's really not geared to the tourist. There are quite a few good Mexican restaurants, obviously, and that's about it. For birders there is Bentsen State Park to the West. Also take a look at my Los Ebanos page for a unique local attraction.
Further afield there is South Padre Island, which is about an hour's drive one way.

Hmmmn, the real question is "does anything happen at all in McAllen?" ;-)

The Chamber of Commerce reports of few things - see http://www.mcallen.org/Business-Events
Let's see...Melba's School of Dance does their annual show, the Chamber is taking members up to Austin on the 10th to buy, er, "lobby" their state representatives, a photographer is giving a talk, and there is a tour of one of the largest adobe houses in Texas...yep, it's going to be a wild time in McAllen, I can see.

Well, you might look at http://www.mcallen.org/Attractions and notice the museums...For myself, I might be tempted to fly Southwest airlines ("the national bus of Texas") up to Corpus Christi (I assume there are direct flights), and go visit the USS Lexington aircraft carrier (http://www.usslexington.com/)...(note that McAllen is served by the airport in Harlingen nearby)...OK, sort of an expensive side trip unless you go up to Corpus for the weekend...

Actually, Bill, McAllen has its own airport (MFE), although Southwest only flies out of HRL. And if one were inclined to fly to Corpus you'd have to go all the way to Houston or Dallas and then backtrack, and in that time you could have driven straight there- from McAllen to CC is about 2 hrs one way give or take.

I knew that McAllen had its own airport, but since Southwest didn't fly there, I wasn't sure that it took commercial aviation...

www.viamichelin.com reports that while the car trip to Corpus is only about 150 miles, they estimate that it would take nearly 4 hours (!)...I guess they don't think much of the speeds on 281 (their chosen route). I wonder how accurate that is...

I don't know how they figure that either, on 281 (and 77 as well) it's the closest thing to an autobahn in the States- people drive 85 mph in the slow lane.
