My wife and I are travelling from Marrakesh to Essouira by bus at the end of March and returning a week later. Do I need to book the bus well in advance ? Anything I need to know about the bus companies, travelling on the buses ? Also how much should I be paying for a taxi from the airport at Marrakesh to the centre of town ? Looking forward very much to our first trip to Morroco and have found VT very useful for planning our itinerary.
From the Airport you can take the shuttle bus 20Dh one way to Bab Dukala from where you can take a CTM bus, alternatively you can take a taxi to the Supratours bus station. You need to haggle a bit for a taxi, pay no more than 80Dh. The bus to Essaouira takes 3 hours including a stop for refreshments, and costs 70Dh. I am reliably informed that the shuttle bus also goes to Djma el Fna and finally the Train station which is convenient for the Supratours bus station. Let me know if you need further information.

Booking the day before should be fine. If you can't get a Supratours bus there always the private bus services from the bus station. (A little bit cheaper, take a bit longer & don't deposit you in quite such a convenient plave)

There is also the system of collective taxis in Morocco and it is more comfortable and convenient than the bus, convenient in the sense that you dont have to buy a ticket in advance, you just wait until the car fills up - it is not expensive, I dont know the exact prices now, but it is reasonable and you can buy an extra seat to have more room or get moving sooner - They leave from the bus stations; once I went to the train station in Marrakesh thinking I could take the train to Essaouira - kind of dumb but it worked out well, I shared a taxi with a Moroccan woman, I had the back seat to myself and what is more, I was going for the Gnaou (sp?) festival without a reservation - I was meeting a French friend who had some idea about camping out with a camel guy! - and the lady I shared with gave me a phone number and the guy had all kinds of apartments for rent! Another time arriving in Marrakech from the desert a guy in my shared taxi helped me find a really cool apartment - so it is easier to connect in a car than a bus....In any case, if you cant get a seat on the bus last minute, you can always find such a collective taxi right next to the station - a car is faster too of course....

Hello, bus Supratours: reservation is not obligatory, but you best go 1 or 2 days upfront to the busstation to be sure of your site. Check out the supratours website: http://www.supratours.ma Cab costs between 50 and 100 dirham, which is a reasonable pricee compared to what we use to pay. I have more tips, been more than once in Morocco. grtz

The most comfortable way to travel is with Supratours or CTM. The grande taxi (shared taxi) are more expensive especially if you are buying extra seats to get room. They squeeze 4 in the back and 2 in the front next to the driver. Easiest and chepest is catching the bus all the way to Djema el Fna straight from the terminal. If you are lucky squeeze into a petit taxi with others and pay no more than DH 20 each.
