Marmaris from cruise ship

by balramdass Online Now Jun 11, 2012 at 6:02 AM

Hi All We will be coming to Marmaris for a day trip with a cruise ship. Can some tell us how far is it from the cruise ship, things to see/do. Nice cheap bar -;) and busy parts of the town. What about local transport, ie, bus taxi? Many thanks in advance

There isn't a real lot to see and do in Marmaris. If you click on my Middle east pages and then Marmaris and Icmeler, then you will see what I found there. It's a favorite with the English people for the warm, sunny weather and the beach. I liked the old Castle the best.

As above - the castle is very good and the view from the castle is good. The harbour is interesting and also the bazaar. The bazaar has hundreds of small shops and is quite an experience - just say NO and walk on when the shop keepers pester you. Or haggle and go as low as you can if you want something - due to the recession in Europe they will sell as the number of visitors is down. The town is quite nice but there is not a lot to see really - its a large town but just for mainly English (like me or you) holiday makers. You can even pay in sterling in the shops. See my Marmaris page for more. You could take an orange coloured dolmus bus to Icmeler. Its only 40p or so each way and takes about 15 minutes - the ride is nice along the coast. Icmeler is a nice town but again not a lot to see but some good bars and restaurants around the canal area. The port is a long way out of Marmaris so take a taxi - they have set fares and like everything in Turkey are good value.

We took a day tour from Rhodes, really a ferry trip and the guide took us to a carpet shop and another outlet. We then had the rest of the day to ourselves, a taste of commercial Turkey, some restaurants with couches and smoking pipes, beautiful blue water, markets etc etc. 40 years ago a small village, now a resort holiday destination. Photos on my page will tell the story.
