Where to stay in Brooklyn and which airport is nearest?

      Brooklyn Apr 27, 2013 at 12:34 PM

I am looking to spend 2- nights in NYC, we were there last year and did lots so are just doing a couple of nights between other areas.

We are looking to do Brooklyn bridge and Ellis Island as we missed these last year and we want to go to Newburgh for a day (OCC and to visit a friend!).

      Where can you recommend?

Last year we stayed at the Holiday Inn Manhattan View in Long Island City and it was perfect - great for everything.
This was suggested by someone on this forum so thought I'd ask for something similar in Brooklyn.
Need something not too expensive, walking distance to trains/subways etc.

My son is Autistic so he doesn't like crowds and the hotel last year was a great escape from the craziness of Manhattan!

Also which airport is closest to Brooklyn? We are flying to the west coast after NYC.

is it true that taxis from NY airports charge a per volume fee? For example they dont take 3 suitcases, it;s over the volume allowed. So if 3 people want to take a taxi from the airport, one has to stay out. Sounds absurd. Is it true?

    • Summer Internship Housing - Where is safe?

New York City May 8, 2013 at 8:12 PM

I am visiting NYC-Manhattan for an internship for about a month this summer. I'm from Houston TX, so I'm used to every other neighborhood being safe/unsafe, BUT because our city is sprawled out over so much space, I'm also used to everyone having a car to drive safely from point A to point B.

Point is, crime and danger are every day life in parts of Houston, but having to give up our safe and personal transportation control to a higher force is absolutely not. So, New Yorkers, I admire you. And I would really appreciate any advice on where is safe/unsafe to live/walk through/travel around in Manhattan. Please?

      New York lodgings

New York City Apr 24, 2013 at 9:16 PM

      Two questions:
      1. Is there something happening the first week of June this year? I see that several hotels in the Times Square/Theater District are already sold out. If there is something to avoid timewise, please let me know what it is.

      2. The Official Spousal Unit, her mother, and I wish to go to Manhattan in June-ish timeframe. Prefer Time Square/Theater District for ease of getting around. Traditionally stayed at the Edison, but they are tired of crowds there (and seem to always to be put in non-renovated rooms). The MIL loved the Casablanca, but the prices have tripled in 2 or so years.

Boutique hotels are OK, but places like the Iroquois are showing up at $556.night in June. Suggestions?

    • Border

Niagara Falls May 6, 2013 at 1:02 PM

My husband and I live in Texas but taking a different route to visit friends and family in Pennsylvania. We decided to make a one night stop in Niagara Falls and made a hotel reservation on the Canada side. I have been reading "horror stories" of incidents that have happened crossing to/from both sides, and very few good stories on that site. We are law-abiding U.S. citizens and are professionals. The horror stories have me/us second-guessing a trip to Canada to see the falls. Are there more "good" experiences than "horror" experiences out there about crossing the border?

      Hi
I'm going to be in NYC for a few days in May. My prepaid phone through Telus Canada will not work and i'm not about to change over to a contract just for 5 days. Niagara CA, to Newburgh

New York State Apr 27, 2013 at 6:12 AM

I am visiting friends for a few days in Northern Toronto and we are hoping to get to Niagara and then from there we will be leaving them and we need to get to Newburgh, NY.

I have a friend who lives near there and we want to visit OCC as my fella loves the series but we are struggling t/o figure out the easiest way.

I have been told that you cannot take a rental car across the CA/US border and Newburgh seemingly doesn't have a train station. I kind of figured that we could get a train to Schenectady and then pick up a car (subject to there being a car collection point) and we could then drive to Newburgh and then on to NYC the following day.

Just one problem, the train from Niagara to Schenectady takes 8 hours and there is just no way I could do that with my son, he is Autistic amongst other things and 8 hours on a train plus a further 2 hours driving would be enough to do me in!!!

Is there maybe a mid way point that would take like 4-5 hours and would be a nice point to stop and stay over night, doesn't have to have much to do, just a nice cheap hotel and somewhere to eat etc?

Also can you buy an Amtrak ticket that allows you to get on and off at all?

by nyholiday2010 Online Now Feb 13, 2010 at 7:57 PM

Friends and I are travelling to New York for Christmas and New York. We have found an apartment but are not sure of the location, having not been to New York and not sure about the winter weather. The apartment is located on West 42nd St between 11th and 12th avenues. Is this location okay for shops and places to eat within walking distance, and is 3 - 4 blocks far to walk in winter to catch the subway? Not sure if this walk will be hard in snow after sightseeing all day. Also, the location seems to be close to major roads, is this likely to be noisy? Are the roads very busy? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The 6 year old is obsessed with national landmarks and going to NYC is his dream come true. We live in rural Maine and not sure how to go about taking a trip to Manhatten. Should we bring our car or find another way to get around Manhatten? Subway and bus with small kids?? Any suggestions? The only things we really want to go see is the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Chrysler Tower and other famous buildings & Central Park Zoo. Thanks for your help. MainePatty
