Manali to Leh with a child

by Anu&Lila Online Now Jun 11, 2005 at 7:44 AM

I'm travelling to India tomorrow and planning to go to Himachal Pradesh to start with but would love to go to Leh when the road opens in July. I'm travelling with my four year old daughter and would like advice from people who've done the trip with children, before deciding wether it's safe or not as I'm a bit worried about the high passes on the road.

Also tips on child friendly budget accomodation in Manali appreciated!

Hi Anu, I haven't done it with a child, but I can put in a few pointers for you. Instead of going by bus, join a jeep going to Leh. The trip costs about 2x as much, but it's safer and faster. Make sure you take a jeep that will get you there in 2 days and that it will allow you to see the scenery during the day. Take lots of warm weather for both of you. Also, take lots of snacks as the stores along the way are primitive and basic.

As for altitude and childres, I can't help there, but 4 years sounds a reasonable age to me.
