What is the quickest way to get to Mammoth Lakes from the Bay Area in late July? We are starting a backpacking trip and need to pick up a wilderness permit as close to 11am as possible before they run out. How long does it take? If we go through Yosemite, do we have to pay for entrance?
Really the only way is through Yosemite (yes, you pay) via Hwy 120 and then south on Hwy 395. Depending on where in the "bay area" it could take you 5-7 hours. Livermore to MM is five hours, alone. You might consider leaving the bay area the night before and staying around Manteca or Sonora. That way you avoid the heavy traffic in the AM and would only have a 3-4 hours drive to MM.
