Interesting villages

by laurey81 Online Now Mar 18, 2003 at 1:21 PM

Hey all! I'm hopefully off to Malta in two weeks, and I can't wait! First time.... I'm really into history, hence choosing Malta. Aside from the lovely but rather more obvious sites to visit, can anyone recommend any villages in particular that just can't be missed? I would especially like to explore peaceful places with alot of quiet history....if that makes any sense? Much obliged! Laurey81

On the mainland, Rabat and Mdina offer an interesting contrast: a tiny, perfectly preserved walled town that's over-run with tourists (Mdina) and a friendly, work-a-day town (Rabat) full of locals going about their business. The church, grottoes and museum here are all very interesting. Worth a day, maybe rounding off with a meal on the Mdina ramparts watching the sunset. But for real peace and quiet, get over to Gozo for a few days. Victoria is fascinating, the landscape is lush, the countryside wide open and the beaches terrific. Plenty more tips and photos on my pages. Happy travels!

The three historic and fortified cities of Cottonera are worth a visit. These are Vittoriosa (Birgu), Cospicua (Bormla) and Senglea (L-Isla). Vittoriosa is one of the most important towns of Medieval Malta and is the first residence on the island of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Amongst the places you should visit are Fort St. Angelo, the Inquisitor's Palace, the Maritime Museum, the Armoury (served as storage for the weapons of the knights and during the Great Seige served as a hospital), and the Bishop's Palace. One of my friends has a little museum in Cospicua, called Bir Mula Heritage, which you might also like to visit (tel: 661000/826427 or email me). He might also be willing to give you a very interesting tour of Cospicua. Here are a couple of links - visitmalta.com/en/what_to_se... allmalta.com/mcm/focus01.htm...
