Heart of Malibu

by r1shy Online Now Aug 26, 2006 at 2:53 AM

We are from the UK and have visited Malibu a few times but we seem to miss quite a lot of it as we dont know where the heart of Malibu is. We'e visited Malibu Colony and found Paradise Cove (by accident) so can you tell me where Gladstones is in comparison and also where there are other nice restaurants/shops (we drive north to Malibu from Santa Monica).

Gladstone's is at the corner of Sunset and Pacific Coast Hwy and is a mile or so S of Malibu. Malibu starts just N. of Topanga Canyon and PCH and continues up 16 or so miles. Probably the center of Malibu is the shopping center at PCH and Cross Creek. As you come up from Santa Monica a few miles past Gladstones you will see Moonshadows, the Mel Gibson was drinking the evening of his recent run in with the local sheriff. A few miles past that you will start seeing houses on the left and shops / stores on the right. Allegria is a good place for dinner. Then you will pass Duke's (a casual fish, burger place) on the left, then the Malibu Pier. At Cross Creek (Shell Gasoline Station) turn right and the Starbucks you see is where Brittany Spears had her kid on her lap (rather than in a car seat) avoiding papparazi. On the left side of Cross Creek is a shopping area with Nobu (sushi), Taverna Toni's (greek) and Tradenoi (italian), all good places to eat. Up another mile or so is Pepperdine on the R and Malibu Bluffs Park on the left where you can watch or join notable locals play soccer early Sat. morning and Tuesday evening (sorry for the shameless plug). A bit further is Beau Rivage on the R, Geoffrey's on the L and then Paradise Cove. At Kanan and PCH is the Sage Room but only open in the evening. As you continue N, Point Dume is on the L, but that is mostly residential except for the market. Barbara Streisant lives on Point Dume. Continue on the R at Busch is another strip center with Spruzzo's for a reasonable lunch or dinner. The Hideaway is across the street on the L. You will pass Zuma Beach which is the main sun soaking, play in the surf beach in the area. Then residential until you hit Neptunes Net. That's it.
    Cheers, Karl

While you are in the area you might take a look at the Getty Villa.

Admission is free, but you must have a timed ticket, which you can get on-line and parking is about seven dollars.
