Hi guys Would really appreciate some help! My husband and I are travelling in August to Malaysia, we plan to spend some time in KL and then move on to a beach resort for maybe a week. I am not sure which island to go to...we spent Christmas in Railay Beach in Thailand and it was very disappointing so I am determined to get it right this time round! While Railay was beautiful, it was very basic, treehouse style bars, sitting on mats on the ground, lots of Bob Marley posters etc..!!! Just not what we were expecting. We are looking for a beach resort with beautiful beach, lively-ish area i.e. shops, restaurants, mixture of bars with actual proper chairs, etc!! More luxury than hippy...does anyone have any recommendations...?

Batu Ferringhi in Penang Island should be a nice place for you. :-))

Tioman island is your new best friend :) If you want comfortable and well done, but with a kampung-esque feel, then I'd say Japamala is probably the sort of place you want. The restaurant is amazing and the beach is heavenly. Chairs are notable by their inclusion, and it is very comfortable and a great place for a retreat and some lazy pampering :) The Berjaya has some similar elements, but from what I heard back from friends who stayed there it was more "hiltonised" in that the place was a little more bland. It is more golf then spa orientated, which might explain it. Both will be a world up on the Bob Marley posters!

For the level of comfort you seem to seek, I would suggest Club Med Cherating, and the time of year would be perfect for it! And it would be turtle season, too! :-) And the beach at Club Med Cherating is a turtle sanctuary. It is comfortable and though all inclusive, you could join in the activities or go solo/double with your hubby on one of the two main beaches and you will find relatively very few people on Pantai, the second beach! And you can dress up a little for the evening meals! You could also join their excursions for a taste of village life, pasar malam (Malaysian night market) or even to Lake Chini to visit the famed lake and have a taste of aboriginal life in Malaysia. Though I haven't personally been there, the other alternative which had been recommended to me is Tanjung Jara in Trengganu. I'm not quite sure how you get there. While Tioman is nice, I would, personally, not stay at the Berjaya, again: after I had food poisoning the first and last time I stayed there! For Tioman, I would stay at somewhere like the Penaga Resort, for a real tast of Tioman! ;-) I find something like Berjaya (which does not have a nice beach imho - the best beaches are in Juara, on the other side of Tioman from Tekek) too close to civilisation i.e. the main jetty and not idilyic! Though there are plenty of tables and chairs! LOL!

You can considered Pulau Duyung for an exotic experience and you can also sight see on how they make boats there. There is a 5 star boutique hotel there Riyaz Heritage Resort and Spa. Let me know if you need more information and promotion price of the hotel.
