Looking for info on travel to mal pais area with a one year old. Is the ferry the best way to get there by car? In the dry season do you really need a 4x4? Affordable places to stay? Panga rentals? flying in from LA can you make it in one day travel.
I recently got back from a trip to costa rica. We drove all over the northern area of Costa Rica including Mal Pais. You dont really need 4x4 but i wouldn't recommend getting a compact car some of the roads have huge pot holes and bumps. You could make it in one day depending on when you arrived in San Jose but i would recommend staying one night in San Jose then driving there early. It takes about an hour to get to Puntareanas where you take the ferry. Then about an hour and half on the ferry. Then like another 2-3 hours driving to get to Mal Pais
