Madrid or surrounding areas?

by Quinn_CT Online Now Sep 27, 2005 at 8:07 AM

Hi there, I will be in Spain for (only) 4 days next week, and am flying into Madrid. I can't decide whether to spend only 1 day in Madrid and the rest seeing the countryside around it, or whether to stay in the city for longer. Any suggestions? I thought of Toledo, but am worried that it is full of American tourists. I would like to see some small, traditional towns, so any suggestions would be great! Muchos gracias! Greetings from Cape Town, Quinn

Hi Don't know if you do have transportation/rental car ?? An idea for visiting some more or less traditional towns around Madrid. - San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with an impressive abbey/cast;e/cathedral - Segovia: with the famous aqueduct, a really lovely square, a cathedral, a castle and a lot more - Avila; with the medieval town walls - La Granja de san Idelfonso: with a royal palace - Manzanares: with castle have fun jaap

Hi, Do not lose time, and spend all time in Madrid, there are lot of things to do and to see. You can spend, if you want one night in Segovia, visiting the ALCAZAR, GRANJA SAN ILDEFONSO ETC.. this place is really nice. 4 days is nothing for visiting Madrid!! Of course, it is my personal oppinion, as Spanish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! bye and BUEN VIAJE!

You could spend four days in Madrid and go to Toledo as a daytrip. There are direct buses to that town.

Rent a car. Go to Toledo. It is worth it. Go to Avila and Segovia. Go to Flamenco in Madrid. There are some good clubs. Go to Plaza de Espana at night and bar hop. Go to the Prado, Note that Spain is not cheap anymore like it used to be. Eat Garlic soup.

I agree with last 2 posts. Toledo is well worth to visit. You won't regret it. Madrid is big city if you but if you plan well you can see the main attractions in 3 days. Check my Madrid and Toledo pages also. Have a good trip! Salu2 Birsen

Quinn, My sister just returned from Spain and loved Toledo, but you only need a day trip. (I have it my "to go" list )Train is the easiest, but bus is less expensive. When I was in Spain last year and recently in France, the English tourists far outnumbered us Americans. I don't think you have to let the fact there there are tourists of all kinds influence your decision to visit a beautiful and dramatic place. Madrid is one of my favorite cities and I could spend weeks there. If you are more specific with what you like to do and see we could help more. There are three fantastic museums, Prado, Boren Thorenmisma (sp) and the Reina Sofia all within walking distance. Plus the Palace, the Plaza Major, Sol, the food, the nightlife, the Sunday morning flea market. Plus just walking and enjoying the City. Have a great time, Karl

If you are looking for neat small towns, you should definitely go to Alcalá de Henares, which is only about a half hour from Madrid Capital. It is supposedly Cervantes' hometown, but less touristy then Toledo. You don't need a whole day there, but it is not far, so you can spend more time enjoying the city. You can take RENFE trains (Cercanías) from La Estación de Atocha (ATOCHA RENFE,linea 1). Please save some time for Madrid though!
