Solo night traveling

by mia123 Online Now Jun 30, 2011 at 3:42 PM

Hi everybody! Can anybody give me some advice about traveling from Tana to Toamasina? My plane arrives around midnight from Paris to Tana. Would you recommend an overnight stay in Tana? Are there any busses or agencies organizing night transport from Tana to Toamasina? I've read a lots of "don't travel during night safety advices" so I would appreciate if somebody could give me the real info in "night travel" situation. I am 29 years old white female and will be traveling alone. Thanks in advance!

Hello, Tana to Toamasina is 7 hours driving if you want to drive directly but don't forget between 2 town has beautiful place to visit as Andasibe where you will find the largest lemur called " Indri Indri" and others species, reptiles, birds,... and if you have more time why not on Pangalane channel. About you want travel at night is not recommended so stay at Anjara hotel if you want to take bus to Toamasina , this hotel is closed the bus station to Toamasina and the price is about Euro 20/night. If you want to hire a car try to deal with the owner it will be cheap. Good luck!!!! Ken

Hi I would strongly caution against driving at night, as it's not a very safe road. A big question is what your budget constraints are. If you have the budget, then flying to Toamasina is the quickest and most comfortable option (and if you are flying Air Mad, you get a discount on internal flights). If this is your preferred option, then be sure to choose a hotel near the airport, as the traffic in Tana is horrendous, and getting to and from the airport during the day takes a surprisingly long time given the relatively short distance. Obviously if you want to catch the bus/taxi brousse to Toamasina, then you'll need to go into Tana anyway. You don't indicate how long your trip will be, but if you have the time, consider spending a couple of days in Tana, as it's a surprisingly interesting place that doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Happy planning! Regards Cathy

Thank you all very much for such a quick answer! Actually I plan to visit my boyfriend (who came to Mada few days ago to work in Toamasina for two months) so we are calculating the best way for me to join him there.

Hi there, Once you arrive in Tana, I would definetely recommend an overnight stay in Tana to recharge the batteries after a long flight. Once in Tana, you can speak to the Hotel loby to organize transportation to the bus terminal. Please note that there isn't really a set departure time since the Taxi Brousse leaves when it's full. Also to make the 6-7 hour travel more comfortable, you can purchase to ticket ( two seats ). Enjoy your stay in madagascar. It's a wonderfull place. cheers, N.
