Valley of the Kings and Luxor

Just returned from Luxor having spent a week at the Karnak hotel, fantastic time and definately the best hotel in Luxor. First thing I would say is be prepared for the mid day heat, very hot in the valley of the kings and also in Luxor. Second thing is don't do what we did and book your trips with the travel rep, use a local hotel taxi. For example a morning with a taxi/driver in the valley of the kings will cost you around £12 to £15 total DO NOT PAY MORE THAN THIS. Also don't let the driver divert to show you other things of interest, be firm but positive of where you want to go and DON'T deviate because he says its better to look at this and that, you will fall into the tourist trap and be taken to one of his friends shops to buy something. Plan your trip! The driver will wait for you in the car parks at the various locations until you are ready to move to another sight. If you are happy with your driver, get his mobile number and use him again, if not there are plenty of others around all hungry for your custom. Karnak Temple is the best sight around, then luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings Luxor museum etc. Horse and carriage ride should be no more than £1, don't get conned into visiting a friends shop while his horse has a rest and drink, its another con! If he says this, just tell him you will get a taxi from here and only pay half what you agreed! his horse suddenly won't need a rest or a drink! When buying anything aim low with any offer, very low! fix in your own mind what its worth and stick to this. They are very good at haggling and will wear you down if you aren't used to it, so fix your max price and I'll bet you get it for this! there are a lot of bargins to be had but tourists fall into paying above the odds and weken in the haggling process Luxor is often referred to as hassle city and with good reason, overall its friendly but can be intimidating if you are not used to it, be firm and don't weaken and you will have a good time.

Why don't you put this information in the "travel guide" section, rather than in the forum?

Surely other travellers would appreciate these information, in particular the price range and tips. Agreed that it would like more easy for others to refer and search for these info if they are in the respective travel tips. Cheers.

it's really great tip, Tony I am from Luxor, and I hate all the hassles my people do, I think that's because of the ignorance and povety of many people who deal with tourists, you can see the real hospitality of Egyptian people if you go away from the touristy places. I hope by the help of the members of this forum, you can stop quite a lot of hassles in Luxor, I hope.!!!!! loads of thanks to all VT members. Farid
